    Got the following via regular mail today from amex. most notably, annual club memberships are allowed, while gift cards are not.

    Eligible:
    *Checked baggage fee
    *Overweight/ovrsize baggage fees
    *Itinerary change fees
    *Phone reservation fees
    *Pet flight fees
    *airport lounge day passes and annual memberships
    *Seat assignment fees
    *in-flight amenity fees (beverages, food, pilllows/blankets, headphones)
    *In flight entertainment fees (excluding wireless internet because it's not charged by the airline)

    Not Eligible:
    *Incidental fees not charged by the airline you're enrolled in (e.g. wireless internet charged by the service prvider and fees incurred with airline alliance partners)
    * Airline tickets
    * Upgrades
    *Mileage points purchases
    *Mileage points transfer fees
    *Gift cards
    *Duty-free purchases
    *Award ticket fees

    That may be what the official rules say but there are plenty of reports of people getting theoretically ineligible charges approved.

    Without that the $200 statement credit would have almost no value to any FF elite

    I just used it to get extra UA miles with the award accelerator.

    agreed... but if i got a notice that gift cards were specifically referenced as ineligible, i'd carefully consider whether i wanted to charge those or not.
