One time when I was there, they were "restoring" the Forbidden City for the Olympics. This included removing and trashing 800 year old roof tile from all of the buildings (I posted a picture of the workers doing this somewhere -- probably in this thread). My wife, who is Chinese, asked one of the workers if we could have some tiles so he gave us a couple of large pieces. Now, in my collection, I have 800 year-old royal yellow roof tiles! Double thumbs up (we need that emoticon). I've seen the Forbidden City since the restoration was completed. The darn thing looks like a plastic Disneyland, all shiny and new. It's definitely lost some of its magic.
