Please list the cities you have found to be the most vegetarian friendly. I will kick it off with: San Francisco
Asheville totally, we have EXCELLENT vegan options as well. And I nor my partner are vegetarian/vegan, but there is a mostly vegan place in town called Rosetta's that has a KILLER peanut butter cake....and the BEST homemade sweet potato fries! They have a smokey tofu wrap that is sooo good too. There is a relatively new place called PLANT that is entirely vegan which from what I hear offers a good bit of uncooked as well. Just put it this way, I over hear parents in restaurants asking their children what protein they want with the dinner.
You might also be interested in a similar scenic (and remote) town: Ithaca, NY. It has a long history of innovative vegetarian cuisine. http://www.moosewoodcooks.com/
China is surprisingly difficult, since dishes listed as "vegetarian" often have pork. I think Thailand, Vietnam, etc. would be good. Paris can be difficult, depending if dairy or fish is an option. Los Angeles and San Diego are pretty good these days. Lots of organic, local, vegetarian choices.
Ya'll come on down now! Yes, we do have a lot of veggie choices here. Seattle is a good city for vegetarians. I'm sure Portland, OR is good, too (going there next month) When I was in the Miami area last year, I found a chain called Giardino Salads that offers a really big variety of salads (we're talking about salads as a complete meal, not just as a side dish). I hope this idea spreads. I'm a vegan, and I use happycow.net for some of my searches when traveling. My next trip will involve a lot of small towns, so I'm using a variety of ways to search and find veggie or veggie friendly restaurants.
Internationally, London is Nirvana (or Heaven, if you prefer) for us veggies...especially if you adore Indian food, as I do!!!
Portland is def good, and pretty much anywhere in California. I agree with the London statement, as any city with a large Indian population is sure to have great vegetarian Indian food. Lets not forget New York City, which has some great spots, including one of my favorites, Caravan of Dreams. HappyCow is my goto, great site.
As much as I appreciate HappyCow and have used it many times over the years, I do find that I have to use other search methods to find veg friendly restaurants, especially in areas with few or no veg restaurants.
I am amazed that, on my Garmin GPS, I can choose cuisine from among Fast Food, Italian, etc., but not vegetarian. One vote for Davis, California (near Sacramento.) Also, San Luis Obispo, CA, where we live, offers lots of choices on most menus. I'd truly rather have lots of restaurants with vegetarian/vegan choices than one vegan restaurant. (Though we have all of the above.)
Great thread Gabbed1! I've personally found that, aside from those listed above, Toronto had some excellent options for us veggie-eaters. Being close to Boulder, CO I can vouch for there as well. I love it here at the HOM in Colorado Springs, but definitely not the most veggie-friendly city. Actually far from it
I will throw Jerusalem out there. With the kosher laws, meat and dairy must remain in separate kitchens. That means tons of all-vegetarian restaurants. Personally, I love middle eastern food.
Vegan Mexican. those are 2 words that are rarely spoken in the same sentance. Gracias Madre in SF is one of my favarites. For those who are vegan and in the bay area, I highly recomend it. http://www.gracias-madre.com
I'd quibble with this, using Orange County (California) and San Diego as examples of places that have large populations from India and yet few good-quality Indian restaurants. The people I know from India complain about it so it isn't just the opinion of a native
Surprised that nobody has mentioned Berkeley. We were at a concert at the Greek Theatre the other night, and one of the things they were selling at the concession stand was green curry tofu. Of course afterward, my friends insisted on a run to Top Dog!
NY is great - Quintessence is awesome. I also like Chicago's scene. Karyn Calabrese has 2 amazing restaurants and a health food shop. Also love Native Foods. Great thread. I'm getting hungry. . .
Pure Food and Wine is also a great place to have raw vegan food http://www.oneluckyduck.com/purefoodandwine/
Any place anywhere as long as there are lots of Hindu people around. During five years as a vegan I was travelling worldwide constantly. There were few troublesome places, rural interior of Argentina/Brazil (lots of seemingly vegan stuff has pork fat), US, Korea (a vegetarian restaurant seems to mean serving vegetables with the beef). However my favorite vegan city is New York. No place else seems to have such incredible variety. Close second is Dubai.
