Was wondering if many are considering a 'quickie' trip to LondonTown to take advantage of the amazing BusinessElite fares from Boston. Just took a look at April 8th to 10th, and the roundtrip fare was $1499.70 (all-in) roundtrip in BusinessElite. Added bonus, you get to enjoy the 'fully flat bed' 767-400 service. Being a 'convenience whore' who loves nonstop flights; this is very tempting. Last time I did such a trip it was a weekend of nonstop food-porn, clubs, and cigars. Though, it was nowhere near as convenient (CVG-DTW-LGW-DTW-CVG); though it was less expensive (under $350RT in WorldBusiness Class on an A330 --- long story ).
It's actually an I fare. Availability seemed decent, when I checked a few dates earlier this morning.
Looks like these have to be issued by today, for travel 26 Mar through 31 Aug. I've been trying to nail down dates for a business trip to take advantage of these (we're cheap, and I usually have to fly coach), but no luck so far.
any thoughts about LHR-EDI-LHR? my son is performing at the The Edinburgh Festival fringe; and while I wasn't going to deal with picking up the SO tickets for another month (or two). This might be a decent option, especially since it's nonstop from Boston.
Take the train. It's a relaxing journey and the train station is in the center of town. The scenery is especially lovely toward the north, for example around York. When I did this, I'm not sure whether I arrived at LHR of LGW, but I learned at the train station in the airport that there were more good trains than the schedule I saw in the US seemed to indicate and, in particular, that I could easily avoid having to first go into London to do this. Having to change train stations in London would not be fun with luggage.
Pretty sure you have to route via London to get to Edinburgh from either LHR or LGW. (Could have been different when you made the trip, I guess, but even the National Rail website that pretty much everyone here uses to find train times is giving all routings via London.) However, it is possible to get from LGW to Edinburgh with only a change from mainline to mainline at the King's Cross/St. Pancras complex. From LHR, it's probably going to involve the Underground, which is a nightmare with luggage. Of course, the only air options out of LHR are going to be BD or BA, both of which will require changing terminals, reclearing security, etc. I'm not sure how I would pick the train departure time, given the variability of UKBA queues.
Excellent. I was planning a trip, but couldn't get my act together by last night. I won't postpone as I expect fuel surcharges to make a rapid return, and you DO have to add the UK's obnoxious departure tax on the return.
I'm pretty sure you're right since LGW is on the south side of London, and LHR's Heathrow Express comes into the city. I might be inclined to fly into LHR, take the HEX, and pick up a train to EDI from there.
Problem is that HEX only goes to Paddington, so you'd have to jump onto the Circle or Hammersmith & City line to get over to King's Cross St. Pancras for an Edinburgh-bound train. Although slower, the Piccadilly line will go straight from LHR to King's Cross, and there should be a lift up to the mainline station there. Also, way cheaper than HEX.
