We’re making our annual hotel Category adjustments for 2012 and would like to provide you with an advance look at the preliminary list of changes. We want to be sure you are able to maximize the use of your Starpoints, so please review the information to decide if it makes sense to redeem before or after the changes take place on March 1, 2012.

While our Categories remain the same, individual hotels may move between Categories each year. You can click here to see each Category’s Starpoints requirements.

This year we have a few more hotels going up than down, but the majority are staying within the same Category. To view a list of the upcoming changes, please visit http://www.spgpromos.com/2012categorychange. Please note that a select number of additional hotels may be added to the list prior to March 1st.

When you’re ready to book, visit spg.com or contact one of our Customer Contact Centers. Thank you for sharing your travels with us.

NYC is getting quite pricey. So is China.

Noticed all 3 properties in Tianjin going down, though. The St. Regis is brand-spanking new, too.

Of note is that Thailand, which has some really fantastic properties, appears to have been badly hurt, revenue-wise, by the flooding this past year. As a result, we can now visit properties like Aloft Bangkok, LM Chiang Mai and LM Chiang Rai at Category 1. (And, near and dear to my heart, the Royal Orchid Sheraton, is down to Cat 2.) Hope folks will take advantage of this and bring the much-needed tourist revenue back to Thailand! With the benefit addition of C & P and points stays counting for status, this should be pretty powerful for SPG members.

The hotels I have been looking at for my domestic travel plans have all gone down by one category. Nice. For instance the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel weekend rate is now 3k points or $250. I think I'll deal in points then.

Why I am going to Harrisburg,... don't ask, it is not my idea.

Completely agree.... especially if you like staying at W hotels. I'm going to miss many of the category 4 hotels as those were always the best value. Category 5 makes many of these hotels not worth the cash and points option anymore.

Thanks for the advance notice! It really is appreciated!

Hmm, as usual the list of hotels moving up is considerably longer than the ones moving down. And unfortunately for me nearly all hotels in Germany, Switzerland and Austria are moving up.Hard to understand for me as I didn't see increasing rates in 2011 for those hotels.

Also the Westin Chosun in Seoul is moving up. I tried to book a c&p for mid march now for 3 months with no availability and even standard room awards are not available. I've called today and the agent was bewildered why the hotel has no availability of standard rooms 4 weeks out. Might it be because of the change in category...? I'll see if rooms suddenly become available on march 1st...

Fairly significant devaluation of SPG points. Most of the increases are in the higher-end categories, whereas most of the decreases are in the crappy lower-end categories.

    Just posted this on FT:

Our "go-to" hotel in NYC is the Parker Meridien. The rooms were getting a bit stale, old crappy TVs, unimpressive bathrooms - but at 12,000 points per night plus the automatic Platinum upgrade to a Junior Suite, it worked well for us.

But at 20,000 per night? Not really close. I get most of my points from credit card spending and would MUCH rather charge $22,000 to the Hyatt card and get a night at the Andaz 5th Avenue. And if I can spend $11,000 on the Chase Sapphire card, that would earn me those same 22,000 Hyatt points.

I know things go up and down (mostly up!) but the Parker Meridien will have to get serious about renovation to be worth those extra points.

Haven't looked at the changes in detail as I currently have no concrete SPG travel plan, but I noticed that FT's equivalent thread has about 10x as many posts as this one.

I guess I'm strangely happy that I actually have a reward reservation in a hotel that's going up. For once, I get lucky.

Yes, it does have 10x the info. People have already run the numbers & posted friggin' bar charts showing the aggregate category shifts. Others are noting the effects in multi-property locations such as BKK (broad range) and Manhattan (even greater skew toward upper end). Somebody even flagged an entry for a property that is allegedly leaving Starwood on the same day the changes go into effect.

OK - that's pretty impressive. Not to change the direction of this thread, but it's the old trade-off, still, even after a year. Much nicer interface and better technology and overall nicer vibe here, but way more info over there.

I'm trying to spend more time here, though. Better filter to noise effect.

Thanks for the heads up. Not sure why you would put in under the sub website of spgpromos. What`s the angle there? Is this a promo attached to the category changes?

This is an internal device only used to make the data more easily accessible. No promotions are attached to the category changes.
