Perhaps something lost in translations or taken out of context? If not, I have to assume that's an attempt to work towards an insanity defense.
Maybe someone here can listen to the Italian news interview and tell us whether he gives the same impression in his native tongue.
I'm assuming he used the word "banale". It is better translated as "commonplace" or "ordinary", meaning it was a normal type of oceangoing accident. And it a way he is correct, there have been similar accidents throughout naval history.
Some accidents may be <meh>, this one is much more than that, but El Capitano of Costa Concordia is not fit to recognize the difference if he thinks what happened was banale in any respect.
Your honor, it's not my fault; the other driver was drunk. How do you know he was drunk? He must have been, he was driving a tree.
its interesting seeing the comments here and elsewhere (in particular the press.. but then so whats new) by individuals who have absolutely no idea what goes on the bridge of large ship. I will go out on limb and I dont have go too far here and predict that absolutely nothing of consequence will happen to the Master of this vessel due to this accident.
Well, the individuals here (of which i am one) seem to be primarily focussed on the curious choice of words by "the Master of this vessel", such as Francesco Schettino, captain of the Costa Concordia, has described the sinking of the vessel as a “banal accident” in an interview. In an interview with Italian Canale 5 Schettino also claimed “destiny” had played a role in the disaster. I am not sure how much knowledge of what's going on on the bridge of a ship is needed to parse words and make fun of them. I'll follow you on that limb and predict that he won't be a master of a passenger vessel again. Maybe Costa has some barge transporting junk that they can have him be master on.
Of course nobody here speak Italian well enough to even translate what he said but absolute conclusions are already drawn. As far your comments as to his future he perhaps wont be employed by Costa but I am even prepared to bet he may still have a career as the master of large vessel. BTW barges do not have masters
I am most appreciative of you bringing this to my attention... "This is an international group" .. yet even Gargoyle was not absolutely certain was he?
Given that there was some sort of Twitter outrage in Italy and a campaign to boycott the TV show he appeared on, I suspect our interpretation of what he said isn't completely off base. But feel free to fill us in with the facts.
What facts do you need to know? Since I cannot ever recall giving an opinion as to what the captain might have said I think might understand than I surely am unable to help you there.. now at the accident itself perhaps ....and then maybe not.
