Just landed in den from 5557.. Diverted from cir. boy was that emergency landing handled poorly. First told that it wud b a crash landing then after people started freaking , fa came back and said all was well. Capt did great job landing but fa sounded freaked. Normal ?
Thinking that may be a spammy post. its the OP's 1st post? unlikely that he would rush to become a MP member shortly after having that kind of event.
Actually I'm not a spammer but just logged in looking for some support .. And perhaps to vent a little. Denver flt 5557 was diverted back to Denver... Thanks anyway folks.
What airline and type of aircraft were involved? What was the nature of the emergency? Tom in the air on AA DFW-OMA on the way to Olympic Trials for swimming
It looks like it was UA5557 on some kind of RJ. The original destination was CID- Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Here's the FlightAware map of the route. The flight lasted 54 minutes.
Yeah. Looks like they took off and discovered some kind of serious issue 20-30 min. into the flight and turned back. Based on the OP's post, it sounds like everyone's okay.
Barry, sorry you had to experience a scary episode like that. Glad you and everyone on the flight were able to land safely. Your first post on this thread was a little unclear and therefore confused some folks. However, I hope you continue to post. MP is a great place to chat, and you'll meet some really nice people here (and also perhaps in person at some of the meet-ups, DOs, Frequent Traveler university, etc.) Even though you've been registered for a while, I'll still say Welcome to Milepoint!
It is pretty rare that a "crash landing" is announced unless pilots are pretty certain that they plan to ditch plane at a location other than an airport. Glad all are ok.
Was it a PA announcement that it would be a crash landing, or did they say to prepare for an emergency landing (followed by instructions to bend over and grab your knees (the brace position). I can't imagine a pilot or FA actually saying "crash landing" over the PA, but sometimes people say things in an emergency that they don't intend.
the most interesting "emergency landing" i had was on a lh flight from muc to sfo: during the sfo approach, the plane (747) needed to fly holding patterns for more than 45 minutes - and they started running out of fuel. so the pilot needed to land in oakland...not a bad airport, but i was a bit "nervous" about the runway length.
Welcome to MilePoint! No need to worry -- Corsair used to operate 747s in and out of Oakland on their route from Paris to French Polynesia.
i did not know that - interesting! i guess the only thing i was "worried" about was the fact that the lufthansa pilot's excuse for the "emergency landing" was because they had not taken on enough fuel for "waiting patterns" i now prefer swiss ;-)
By the way, are you sure it was a LH 747 from MUC to SFO? They've always operated Airbus A340 on that route as far as I can think back, and I don't think LH has any 747s based at MUC (maybe that was different in the past).
it was a 747 for sure - and also lh...but you're right: it must have been fra-sfo. i flew sfo-germany 12 times in 2011, so must have mixed up dept. airport
Back in the day, TWA had flights between SFO and OAK using some L-1011s on the route. No problem for the length of runway.
It was me. I was sitting in the exit row and I blew my big moment. On a serious note. That must've sucked, glad everyone was ok.
Between SFO and OAK? L-1011s? Oh my! Maybe if they had used high-speed ferries, they'd still be in business today
This was operated so that TWA could claim direct service to OAK as well as SFO. It wwas scheduled as a ten minute flight, although I once had an out-of-it travel agent tell me it was a 70 minute flight due to a change of time zone. The L-1011 was a special treat to feel almost like this big plane was skimming the water, although they announced the flight path as several thousand feet, maybe even 5,000. I'm not sure whether this was before or after the SFO helicopter service across the bay, IIRC to Emeryville. In the same era, TWA flew ninety miles between JFK and PHL in mainline, sometimes L-1011s, at about 7,000 feet.
I flew OAK-SFO once, but that was because our SFO-bound flight was diverted to OAK due to an emergency landing closing the runway at SFO for a while.
CO used to fly IAH to EFD (Ellington Field, now closed). It was about 25 miles, lasted about 5 minutes in the air. If you were connecting to another CO flight from IAH the flight was free. You could also score an easy minimum of 500 miles back in the day.
