Instead of staying at The Lodge at Koele or the Four Seasons Resort Lana'i Manele Bay Hotel, why not buy the entire island? The entire island of Lana'i is up for sale for $600 million. Lana'i is the sixth largest of the Hawaiian Islands and is also known as the Pineapple Island. It is currently owned by David Murdock (Dole Foods). If you've never been to Lana'i, staying at The Lodge is a very different kind of way to experience Hawaii. You might want to try it before you buy. News and video about the offering here: http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/18803739/hawaiian-island-up-for-sale
Didn't know the island was privately owned. Wonder what % commission they would pay if I brought the buyer?
Me too. Why don't we pool resources and buy it together? Though a small island, I'm sure it's big enough for the two of us.
I was thinking why not rename Lanai as Milepoint island. Let us all pool resources and buy the island. Then we would pester the airlines to regularly offer deals to Lanai (LNY) airport.
If I can get it on my Sapphire card, does it count for the 2X travel bonus? Plus the 7% annual dividend, that works out to ~1.3 billion Ultimate Rewards points.
I actually think that one would be among the more expensive if you consider all the lawsuits you might face.
Finally, a great opportunity to use my skypesos! They would take them, right? :-D Sent from my iPhone using milepoint
What do you mean, lawsuits. King HaveMilesWillTravel will immediately impose a 7 mile exclusion zone.
So tempted, but the resort fees that SPG just hit me with on another island has killed my real estate budget.
Not a big airport, only a 5001 foot runway, and not very busy. And you can't even refuel your plane there.
The article says that the owner is footing a $18-25 million/yr loss on the island just maintaining the hotels and facilities. Not sure how many billionaires who want to throw away that kind of money annually on top of the purchase price just for the sake of the island... but I'm sure someone will end up stepping up.
agreed, staying at The Lodge on Lana'i was one of our best Hawaii trips. IIRC it was an SPG property when we stayed, I think now it is Four Seasons.
Yes, it is now managed by Four Seasons, and still a very special experience. When I was there, Ron Seigel (then at Masa's) was the chef for the evening. A truly memorable meal.
Rumors of an imminent sale are flying fast and furious here in the Islands. Bill and Melinda Gates were married on Lana'i-- they rented out the entire island to prevent paparazzi and interlopers from joining the celebration. Larry Ellison Co-Founder/CEO of Oracle Corp. has a house on Lana'i. Both have been mentioned as possible individual buyers. If you want to create 'Milepoint Island' you'd better act fast!
Hot off of the press: According to our governor, the new owner of Lana'i is Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corp.
