Now someone just needs to offer a better price for a DSL/cable replacement package over LTE, and I'll drop the wires in a heartbeat!

Yeah - but it would need to have unlimited data, which is, I think, the limiting factor. For a home or office environment to no longer have unlimited data would be a pretty major problem, considering how we all use it.

I am in front of a Starbucks in Palo Alto, CA right now on my new iPad. I am here because my client was quite blown away with the presentation quality earlier today that he wanted to go immediately to the store where I bought mine (the only store in the area with them in stock) He just bought his and is also using his as i write. Oh, well, back to work!

Agreed, those 5gigs would be gone very quickly with netflix and mlb on apple tv. and with 50 meg fiber Included in my assessments, 17 meg is kind of blah ;)

Didn't realize that Starbucks was carrying the iPad. Nice!

Assuming you meant the Apple Store nearby, I'm surprised to hear they have them in stock.

I was at an Apple Store this past weekend and saw many employees walking around with iPad boxes to give to customers. Of course they could have been iPad 2's...

I was using the iPad in front of the Starbucks which is close to the Apple Store where we bought the iPads. They were in stock, and are right now, because the Apple Store in the Stanford Shopping Center is tiny, they claim it to be the smallest one in California, so they got a big stock in comparison with their selling capacity. That is all I know.

Yeah, I was meaning a more competitive overall price structure.

Oh how I wish. My options right now are a whopping 1.5Mbps DSL or cable-based from Charter. I have read and heard only bad things about Charter in this area, so I deal with DSL. AT&T now says I have U-verse in my neighborhood as of a few months ago. I checked to see what higher speeds I could get with U-verse than I'm getting now. They said 1.5Mbps was the fasted U-verse service for me. Umm... that's what I have now. I asked how it'd be any different. They said U-verse is fiber optic to the house. Except I know that's not really trueU-verse, unlike FIOS, is fiber to a junction box and then copper to the house--and even if it were, 1.5Mbps is still 1.5Mbps. So, if I could get even 20 GB of LTE or so a month for $50, I'd jump on it in a heartbeat.

Funny - AT&T does the same thing in my area. My fastest DSL is 1.5Mbps, and that's the only option I have with U-Verse. So is there really a difference? In name only, I assume.

I use TimeWarner, which is fine, but I'm seriously eyeing a Verizon iPad for some fast tethering.

I got my new iPad on Friday and used it on a trip over the weekend. The screen is gorgeous, however I think the viewing angle is slightly narrower than the previous generations. The pad is also noticeably heavier than its immediate predecessor. It also run hot. I can't remember either of the first two generations getting hot unless I was playing a graphics intense game, though even browsing the internet on LTE gets this baby HOT, not unlike my old MBP. It will be interesting to see what happens to it when I put it in a case that has a back (STM Skinny is on order).

This leads me to the internet. Holy smokes its fast. I realize the iPad is hardly the first device that is 4G enabled however it is the first I have ever used. I am fairly well versed in technology and I knew that 4G was really fast though after so many years of cell phone providers trying to convince me that whatever the current generation of cellular connections was "broadband" speed and it never really living up to the hype I guess I discredited real 4G before giving it a whirl. The new iPad has changed the way I think about what I can do when I am remote in one weekend. You can do anything you want like you were sitting at your desk. It is home broadband speeds fast with almost no lag. I was sitting on the plane at SFO with one bar and was getting 19/7mbps down/up. You pull out the pad as your are walking through the terminal or at the hotel and you don't have to finick around with logging into a hot spot and you don't have to sit and wait for full webpages to load. You can have video chats from the back of a cab. The one problem and I am sure it will change as networks expand/mature is that bandwidth is limited (or expensive if you want lots of it), though that is for another thread. Looking forward for ATT to flip the switch on the hot spot feature.

Thanks for the report - sounds great!

Have they said or implied that they would, or just wishful thinking?

Very strange. I have not noticed any difference in temperature from the 2 to the 3 (or the 3G 1). I haven't used it for any heavy gaming, but have used it online a lot (LTE). I think I would check yours out if it keeps getting hot. How's the battery life?

I only have the wifi version of the Ipad2 (we also have an ipad 1 with 3G in the household), I can for sure feel the difference in weight from the wifi only 2 to the LTE 3, but is the weight difference really that big between the 3G 2 and the LTE 3?

It turns out that it does, indeed, run 10 degrees hotter than the iPad2. See Macrumors: New iPad Runs About 10 Degrees Hotter

I've never felt that any ipad has run hot at all and I wouldn't categorize 10 degrees hotter as being very hot
  4. autolycus Gold Member

You're right. 92.9F isn't HOT. It's warm to the point of being uncomfortable in someone's lap for an extended period, but in the type of way that would make you sweaty rather than burned.

If an iPad is running hot to the point of burning not being able to be held for a long time, something is wrong, and it should be taken to Apple to be checked out.

yeah, it can get a bit warm with graphics intensive apps, but I don't really notice it simply using LTE verizon around the bay area. As for speeds, I get about 25-30MB down and 9-12MB up in the bay area. Might have to simply make THIS my device for mobile interent, get rid of the hockey puck and call it a day!

I've been on it for over two hours now, LTE, and it's not even warm. I guess it varies

Those numbers sound like ATT. They will shrink as more people use the network. Although if VZ is any indication, you should always get about 20 down.

My numbers were from a VZN LTE ipad in the bay area.

I read the CU article. They had to keep it plugged in using LTE and solid capacity gaming for 45 minutes to get the heat. Duh! No problem. I do not game, but do consume graphics. Mine has not risen above ambient temperature yet. It is fast>>>>>

No, I got WiFi only. My IPad 1 was WiFi and Cellular, but I almost never used anything other than WiFi, so I opted for WiFi only this time. Cheaper, simpler and lighter. I wonder how many people actually use the iPad for cellular data? Enough that they're screaming about data plan overages, but that should come as no surprise to anyone capable enough to connect the thing. I do have unlimited data for my iPhone in Brazil and the US, with limits for France, Russia, Spain and Italy sims. For other countries I usually roam on the Brazil (Vivo) sim because the offshore data packets are cheaper on that than on the US or others. That may be the only thing that's cheaper in Brazil.;)

Do I really need 4G. I think not. I have good access via phone for the times I am out of wifi range. I have wifi at home and at my office. When I travel, I rarely need instant web access. More and more hotels have free access in the public areas and some in the room. And finally, it is too big to carry around so I likely will leave it in my room and just carry my phone.

The data plan is a killer for me. If the iPad had a meter that cut off data at 249.9 MB unless manually bypassed I might consider the extra costs. As is it is just too risky.

My wife has an iPhone 4S. I have a Blackberry but am considering an iPhone once the 4G models are out. If my almost three year old Blackberry dies before then, Samsung has some nice 4G models available.
