    update >

    some post/like counts are insane.

so silver/gold are just 100/1000, or are there other factors as well?

I thought the thread was a cute way for a newbie to get a like or two when they joined, but at this point, it's totally ridiculous. A person who joined the day before yesterday now has 1700+ likes. What's the point of trying to have a reputation feature if the system can be gamed so easily? Limit the number of likes you can give/receive in a day to make them more 'valuable'.

Or a wait between likes will do the trick (I am going to get stoned by posting this comment)

I don't think so yet.. There are some silly post-padding posts (count backwards) etc but I think it's ok now.

As I type this 100th post I just boarded CO 112 in businessfirst and will dream of my silver status that will show up in my account shortly LOL :)

I've thought for the past hour or so how I wanted to reply here.

I think a lot of this whether you want to admit it or not is just a case of why you're better than they are. I just found the site yesterday morning via a gadling post. I had no idea MP was created. I would have been over sooner. And I take this thread as "I was here first and I want to stay ahead and the way I am 'doing' it is the best and only way."

You need to remember the group of people you're trying to tell not to game the system. Its what we all do as much as we can in our flying and hotels and all other methods of point and mile accumulation.

I even see this in the request for a timer on the likes. It comes across as a way of maintaining your lead and little more.

If Randy and company don't want this done, they'll change it. And they can honor the "mistake fare" or they can do away with it. And then like any supplier that honors or not we will decide our reaction to it.

But this thread to me is just another "I fly J all the time so you Y people shouldn't be allowed on my site" topic. Which of course is funny because your employer pays for it.

The like me thread is nothing but a video game to me. Its been fun. I've "met" a lot of people I didn't know before. If and when its done, its done. But to cry my content it better than yours when we're all playing within the stated and given rules is the same as crying the Yankees buy championships. Change the rules if you don't like it.

Tenmoc, your at 850 points already, have you been posting here for all 24 hours since yesterday?

    :)

It's taken me over two weeks to just get 100 posts.

its my impression building "positivity" is a goal (like not having a dislike option)

Right now there is no "cost" to the person doing the like. (Or at least, we think there's no cost- it might factor into the secret recipe for the algorithm.) Perhaps if "likes" are throttled that will cause people to stop and consider whether a post is "likeworthy" (reference Elaine in the TV show Friends...)

One way is a time limit- New members get 4 likes an hour for the first 48 hours. Then members get 6 likes an hour. Silvers get 16, golds and plats 24, white envelope level gets 30.

Or value the posts (like the old hated sLUT fares on DL). A newbie like is worth .5 points, a member like is 1 point, silver 1.25, gold 1.5, plat 2.

I tend to agree, we are all frequent flyers (most anyway) who spend a lot of time looking for loop holes to be had in frequent flyer schemes, airfares and hotel deals, why would we be in different here?[IMG]

If there is an easier way to get points I am sure that there is somebody here that will find it.

I think that is one of the ideas, among others to have this as Beta to work these thing out. Just my 2c not a rant.[IMG]

Trying to balance. Like to have some fun and also want to make new posters feel they are being seen and replied to. I think over time this will all shake out, and I hope that others do not fell that those with high level are simply padding, because there is alot going on here, and community building, new friendships, etc. is as much a part of MP as anything else IMHO.

I think it's reasonable to have this as the idea behind likes is you actually like what the poster has said. If you are actually reading the posts, it shouldn't cause much problems/inconvenience

I'm not very concerned about preserving something I don't have nor want.

The like feature was supposed to be a better way of rewarding member value than simply using post count. Three people 'liking' someone saying "yeah, I've been there too" adds zero value to the board.

Yes, it's messy right now, but that's to be expected with 3,400 miles/points collectors. It's good to have this period to see what unexpected chaos we can stir up, so that in a year, when there are 70,000 members, or in two years when there are 180k members, things run smoothly. A few off kilter scores now isn't significant in the long run.

As Randy pointed out, there are many millions of active members of FF programs, so the potential market of MP is huge.
3,400 is a small fraction, and of those, the 30 or 50 wild point chasers are a statistical speck.

I knew a fascinating artist, Edgar Miller, he was in his 80's at the time, who spoke to me at length about that, "picture frame views". He felt Chicago only had 4 or 5 really striking, beautiful views. Cities like Venice, Prague, and Budapest, and small villages around the world, have views to take your breath away everywhere you turn.

As much as I understand the dangerous of padding which doesn't necessarily generating valuable content, I can't help but also agree that currently we're in beta and the idea is to test the platform. Those that are trying to game the status points are also helping to test the limits of that.

It's an interesting experiment all of this and I look forward to seeing how they take the platform forward as more functionality is enabled.

I think people should just generally take a step back. Yes we are all FF and try to gain extra miles or points or grab mistake fares or order coins for more miles/points. And although I think the "our way vs your way" thing is rather sophmoric, at least when it came to actual miles or actual points it was a discussion of something having monetary worth. Those miles and points were actually capable of not just being turned into cash-equivalents...but at a limited supply of what they can be turned into (ie one F seat on a particular flight, one suite avail over Thanksgiving etc). So there was this aspect of not all being together...but at some point competing...

Here, these points mean what exactly? Luggage tags? Adblock? Nothing really substantial...though nice. These points are just Randy's way of engendering excitement about this new site....to build some community and to build content. As I said above somewhere in this thread.....some do one..some do the other...and some do both. All are good. Will certain people go for the brass ring? Yes......but if it wasn't points it would be something else. Does the amount of points really matter in the end? No...not really....Randy isn't dumb....this is just a nice way of giving all of us beta testers something "tangible" as a reward for being here and working on the site...

    Ok..enough soapbox :)
