I'll probably no longer be attending in July, but maybe some others are, so we'll keep this thread going for now :D

For the geeks and 1337 uber h4x0rs among us, a small group of us are going to get together at HOPE in New York City this year, July 13-15. H.O.P.E. stands for Hackers On Planet Earth, one of the most creative and diverse hacker events in the world that's been happening since 1994.

So hurry up and get your permission slips signed by your better halves, call your bank manager for that second (or fifth) mortgage, or whatever - just get your butts to NYC this July!

    It's normally $120, but you can pre-register here for a $20 discount:

And, discount hotel rates at Hotel Pennsylvania (though you may want to read this):

(It was originally going to be DEFCON in Vegas, but apparently I spend too much time on the West Coast ;))

I might be working in LAS this summer so wouldn't mind catching up with you guys. Have no clue to what Def Con is but probably isn't something I'm in to :p

If it's not your daughter's, you don't have to be there. :D

But my daughter is a part of the wedding party... So although I don't have to be there... I have to be there!

What about if we did HOPE instead of DEFCON? July 13 - 15, so that should sort out the conflicts for you and theMan - http://www.hope.net/

except i would probably spend way too much money there:eek:

Although NYC wouldn't be as fun as LAS, that would indeed make it easier to find the time that week.

Consider yourself now downgraded a bit in my eyes.

So, for those of us who are shall we say, technically challenged, are there enough shows during the day while the geeks are saving the world, to make it worthwhile attending?

I've never been to Defcon, but in my 10 years of going to HOPE there have been a number of presentations on lightly technical but still fascinating topics (erosion of privacy laws, lockpicking, caller id spoofing, social engineering, etc.) My ex-girlfriend is not a technical person at all, but she came with me twice and enjoyed it (although she did head out for shopping when there was nothing of interest scheduled).

The Vegas show schedule is not geared towards daytime activities, most shows are 7pm and 9:30pm with weekend matinees at 4pm. They are very serious about this schedule, going so far as to edit the Phantom libretto (horror!) to fit it in. There are, however, a number of non-show activities - some of the best I can think of include the art museum at the Bellagio, the aquarium at Mandalay, and helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon (highly recommended). The Star Trek Experience is rumoured to reopen sometime this year as well, but I can't find anything solid on it. I have spent a lot of time in Vegas and never been bored ;)

Is she ex because you went to too many hacker cons? :p

I've put in a tentative request to go to blackhat (and therefore defcon). I can't usually go at my company because my company divides conferences up between the different regions, and usually only the NA guys get to go. Haven't been for a few years, but would be good to go back.

Oh come on... the Fake Price is Right Show is a blast! :)

I'm sorry... but there is no law in NY that states that what happens in NYC stays in NYC...

It is a law in Vegas... Isn't it?

And even *if* one were to be bored, there are endless pools full of eye-candy and of course BlackJack tables that can entertain for many many hours on end. :D
