SPG has really played everyone, including me, for suckers. We're doing all this advertising for them for a measly 100 points???

And to read everyone going crazy about this (bloggers included) baffles the mind. If they gave away 500 or 1000 points, it would have been understandable; but 100 points??

One of my first posts at Milepoint was a poll titled "How Little Is Too Little" asking people how small the number of miles would be for them to have to take some action to claim them (as I recall, the answers skewed heavily towards the very low end).

So I'm a bit chagrined to admit that I clicked on the link, and even got my wife an SPG account so she could as well. It's not so much the 100 miles (although it can't hurt to throw a few miles into the account, maybe it will generate a good offer for the credit card, or something) but the (very small) chance to win 100K miles.

2 cents a point, so $2 for me and $2 for my wife. Took about 30 seconds - took longer to start this thread.

But on the blog mentions, yeah, that was ridiculous. But those guys need content too - SPG knows that.

I just "clicked-to-like" because I needed to put some points, any points, into my SPG account that I got at the Gold level for 2 years through AMEX, but did not use a single time, as there was no point to since there was a Hilton in every city I traveled to and got Diamond treatment as opposed to the Gold treatment I would have gotten at SPG. I was just downgraded to 'Preferred Guest' this year but, at least, now I have some points in the account!

It's comments like this that devalue what was to be a better system on milepoint. :(

More than the assorted counting/game/whatnot threads? I liked the OP because it was useful to me. But I don't really put much value into like counts and points as I don't think this gamification adds much value to it (other than reduce the number of "+1" or "Exactly!" posts... and even I have been guilty of posting "Exactlies" simply because it added more emphasis than another "like").

I agree with you of course.

Likes need to be earned. Asking for a post to be liked is uncool. I'm not picking on anyone with my comment. What started out as a good idea has gone downhill. It's something that needs to be discussed with Randy et al.

I fundamentally agree with the sentiment expressed in this post. I do not know about you but I would think that unsolicited 'likes' would be much more rewarding since they would reflect how people genuinely feel about a post...

To post with the expectation that one's posts will be 'liked' may lead to a situation where posts reflect what a poster believes people want to hear and not necessarily what s/he believes, thereby robbing the discussions of a key element that makes them so great: a genuine exchange of views.

If I have to rely on a 100 point promo for content, I'm in trouble!

Hotels & airlines have offers all the time for 100, 250, 500 points for opting in to marketing emails. This is essentially the same thing, a small payment in exchange for permission to contact you, just via a different channel.

It's all part of the game, and to expect that we'll all visit a site called "mile|point" and not try to get status here like we do on all travel loyalty programs is just not realistic.

Look, I'm in competition for likes like everyone else. When people (very generously) post SWUs for Gold members only, I want the ability to get those. Just like I want upgrades from the airlines for being in their elite programs.

This thread is about getting points from SPG. "Likes" are the point currency here on MP. Acting like we're all "better" than wanting status here is fooling yourself.

I stay out of the counting threads, and the sigs with the "Press this Like button" stuff, and I do try to earn my likes based on valuable content, but if others want to earn theirs that way and the rules allow it, fine by me.

If you say the MP point system has gone downhill, fine, there isn't much reward to it anyway. Frankly, the reasons I like MP are really for the nicer tone (and I don't mean that tongue-in-cheek - you have been nice about this), and the better technology. But if the points are here, sure, I'll try to get them.
