That's more like it! But still not correct. At least you're on the right continent now though. This airport has something in common with BTR and to some extent YHZ.

More than three hours and no guess. so:

hint #1 This airport serves the 4th largest city of the country in which it is located

I guess that leaves Singapore out. Doesn't really have four cities :)

I know a couple of this thread's regulars (including this one) are schlepping through airports themselves today - that might explain the low frequency of guesses.

All that said, a stab: CNF?

No not CNF, which serves the third largest city in the country, BTW, and at it's worst was not quite a shabby as this place. Come to think of it, both this place and Belo Horizonte are connected to coffee in one way or the other.
This airport serves only two international destinations.

Just got in from my airport of the day. BAQ?

It is true that BAQ appears to meet the hints thus far. But that is not the airport. This airport is not in South America.
The airport is currently serves by only two airlines, both based in the Capital city of the country, neither being particularly famous carriers.

No, not Erbil. The capital city of the mysterious country does have some things in common with Erbil, but the dominant language around the city of our airport is not Kurdish. There are several languages commonly spoken in the city our airport serves, but most of them are the languages of the nearby places across the water that have supplied immigrants over the millennia.

Without actually telling you the airport itself I am not sure what to do. I once lived in this country; it is not renowned as a nice place to be. The country has had some changes in government recently.

In my life I'd never have imagined this. It is not Taiz. Taiz does grow coffee and cotton that are exported from this port city, and does grow Qat that is consumed here and elsewhere in Yemen.

There is good news in this. There are only a couple more airports in Yemen. Only one of them serves the fourth largest city, where Amharic, Swahili, Vietnamese and other languages compete with arabic. It has been so for thousands of years, nothing new. This city is almost magical in some ways, intolerable in others. This bank:
http://www.ibyemen.com/en/aboutus.php which I founded in 1979, has a branch in this city.
