I love many, many of the picks in this thread. I don't think I can top anything already mentioned as far as "best." So, I will throw in my choice for best everyday drink, best value, and my perennial favorite since my undergrad days-- Evan Williams.

I added Suntory Hibiki 17 and Johnny Walker Blue to the list of scotches I have sampled, thanks to the NH and SQ lounges.

Both are very good blends, but I think I like the Hibiki better. Richer mouthfeel.

Between those and the Highland Park 12 SQ serves in the air in C, I had a happy week last week for scotch drinking.

Interesting to see the Glenlivet in the company of Laphroaig and Lagavulin.

Just for kicks I picked up a bottle of Kirkland (Costco brand) bourbon. Not bad - I wonder who makes it?

I just got a bottle of Glenmorangie 18 from my fiancee as a thank you for her trip to Maui. Looking forward to cracking that. I also had a taste of Auchentoshan a few weeks ago. Never heard of it, but it's good.

I agree variety is important (and sometimes struggle to maintain it - way too islay heavy. You could just about replicate a tour of the island, I think.). The spice cabinet portion of your collection certainly spans a wide range!

I've heard good things about the older glenfiddich, but the 12 yo really turned me off of the distillery and I have not sampled. It just did not suit my palate.

Agree. Love variety. Sometimes I will ask a bartender at a nice lounge or bar just to surprise me with something and most of the time it is just a great scotch or bourbon.

I recommend Aberlour A'Bunadh scotch. It's cask strength so you need to add some water.

I also like Blantons and Pappy Van Winkle bourbons.

When I'm in Great Britain and go out for drinks, I like to sample single malt scotches that I cannot obtain so easily at home. I tend to ask a colleague to suggest an unusual one for me. Sometimes asking the bartender results in a great find and sometimes they assume that the dumb American doesn't really want one of the weird ones and just suggest a standard Oban or Glenfiddich.

Mostly a bourbon guy here, but I recently had the opportunity to try Lagavulin 16 and it was quite delicious. The peaty and smokey notes were exactly where they're supposed to be.

I know lots of people who enjoy Lagavulin, which means I have lots of friends who offer me a pour. ;) Probably the only reason I don't bother to buy a bottle for myself.

It was also recommended in another thread and it is on my list to try, hopefully this weekend.

I recently received a Lagavulin Distiller's Edition that is quite good as well. The regular 16 is an excellent choice of scotch to have in the cabinet.

Annoyed that I delayed purchasing theSE for too long. Definitely one I'd like to sample.

I'm sure you can find it online somewhere.

Another of my favorites - only had it a couple times, on someone else's dime - Brora 30 year old. Pricey and delicious!

The problem with acquiring it online is that the principal weakness of my collection is decidedly *not* addressed.
