It's a trade off. There are so many good hotels in the city. The bridge is new since I was there last, and makes that area more accessible. I'm afraid if I stay too close to a beach that the beach is where I'll end up spending all of my time.

I'm in Charleston right now (well, actually at Folly Beach :))
Will post some new pictures while I'm here.
The video is right about one thing - ya'll can always come back.
I'm sure I've come back a lot more than 100 times since I grew up here. :)

I've been reading the reviews on Trip Advisor, and have been leaning toward the Mills House or Embassy Suites, if my focus is gonna be on the historic distance. I definately would like to stay away from valet parking; but some reviewers have suggested that parking garages in Charleston don't have in/out privileges.

Would have like to have gone to this DO but I will be in HNL. I would love to visit Patiots Point and Medal of Honor Museum there

Yeah, the parking decks around the city aren't going to offer in and out. I usually try to avoid valet in most cities but it's a good choice in Charleston. If we do meals and some activities that originate from downtown like a dinner cruise, carriage ride tours, stuff like that... we won't need to drive much. We'll only be driving if we do Patriots Point, a Plantation, etc and for personal exploring.

I'm not a fan of valet parking. I spent a few nights at the Boca Raton Resort this spring, and the valet parking was by far the worst thing about the stay:oops:. Never remember having so much trouble getting into or away from a Hilton property.
Best Western and LaQuinta are about 3 miles from the Charleston historic district; and may have riverview rooms.

Jeepers. Is that weekend also the Fall Tour for the Preservation Society of Charleston? Any Milepointers actually been on that Fall Tour?

I went several years ago. The lines were long to get into several of the houses. We determined that starting at the furthest point and working our way back, would have probably helped with the congestion. The houses were interesting, but I was slightly disappointed in the gardens. There were a couple that were innovative and interesting, but several of the houses did not have gardens at all. Since I had limited time to go, the tour that we could do was more on the fringes of the historic district and not in the main district.

It looks like this will be the first weekend of the Tours and I hope to catch one while we are there. I guess that means that I will also need to go ahead and make my reservations ASAP, as I am assuming that weekend will get sold out quickly.

Thanks for your reply KathInJax. I just stumbled across the Fall Tour last night as I was daydreaming about Charleston. The big deal about the Fall Tour seems to be that you get a chance to see private residences that you would not normally get a chance to see. I did alot of this years ago when I was young. Ironically, I think the last private residence I toured was Auldbrass Plantation in South Carolina; back in 2007.

Have never done a "DO" - but this one sounds great!! A visit to one of America's greatest cities + a chance to go to Bessinger's for a BBQ sandwich and onion rings (outstanding!!):)

The new phone books are here!
Actually, what I got in the mail was an official visitor's guide to Charleston, SC.
I requested it through the charlestoncvb.com, which is interesting, too.
I'm beginning to get the feeling that may be a busy weekend in Charleston, so think about getting a room soon.:)

Nothing like what Charleston is like right now with Spoleto going on.
I just walked in the door from a brief but very nice visit to the Holy City. :)

I need to start figuring out how to plan this thing. I've been so busy that I can't see straight lately.

Shouldn't be too bad though. I'll need to figure out some great spots for meals and a few activities.

Mrs. Flier and I were down there for Spoleto this past weekend, and I thought it seemed a little quieter than usual for Spoleto. And traffic for the drive home on Sunday afternoon/evening wasn't bad at all.

We attended some shows at Theatre 99 and got several free passes good for Wednesday and Friday night improv shows. A few of them don't expire until October, so I'll offer a couple up later in exchange for a Kiva loan.

This is a city that has been on my list of places to visit for a long time. I'm in.

Are there any other cities in the south that are cheap? I haven't decided if I'm going to fly or drive but there may be a few people from cities around the south that you could hitch a ride with or maybe you could split carriers.

I could try and do redemptions... If its cheap enough... Or I can just go to Charlotte and hitch a ride to Charleston..

Well, PDX-CLT in F is just over $2,325 non-refundable and over $3K refundable.
    PDX-MYR in F is $1175 non-refundable and $1379 refundable though it's a 2 hour drive from MYR.

I'm baffled about why most of the non-refundable fares in F for PDX-CHS cost more than the refundable fares.
