I figured that there was a password/username combo (as with Hyatt SFO) and asked for it. I used the Diamond check in desk and he assured me that it would be taken off. Even more interesting, I was charged twice....once for the regular 12.95 (i did not choose this option) which had been removed, but also for the 25.90 premium (the service I opted for). The 25.90 was the charge in question. She could not have been more nice about it. Next time, I'll just check with you for the password ;)

But last week, I was on an award ticket for PVD-EWR-FLL and I was rebooked on US for PVD-CLT-FLL. I have this funny feeling that UA is taking the US methodology of "it's up to the individual to either follow policy or just make the situation right"

I was told at check in, at the Diamond/Plat line, that only the regular internet was free for Diamonds.

That is a possibility. It also may be that UA is more flexible in reprotecting award travel on alliance partners and/or domestic flights, since costs would likely be lower than long-haul, especially for premium cabin award travel.

Wish I had read this sooner! I've been in the LAX area all day for work. Would have loved to have met up again. Next time! I hope you had no issues with your new flight!

There was a note on the pricing screen that there would be a surcharge for the premium internet for Diamond/Plats and the regular one is free for Diamond/Plats.

I called the front desk and they said that it didn't matter which option I chose, it would be taken off my bill. I picked the premium and it did not get charged to my bill.

When I checked out, mine wasn't on the bill nor on the emailed bill, but then added sometime in the following 24 hours

While most airlines still won't send you to OAL when on an FF ticket, many FF miles are "sold" to other companies such as credit card companies, hotels, etc. and they have revenue associated with them, and the FF seats are sometimes generating more revenue than the cheapest seats sold for cash. I think the policy is maintained this way simply because they have a good excuse and can't be forced to send you to another airline. It is short-sighted if they annoy a high value customer.

my receipt says $107, but it looks like there's a pending charge from the hotel for $157. that might just be the initial charge that they put on a room, or it might be an inflated hotel charge. i'll have to investigate.....

Although I was in F and when I inquired about it on my return with the UA agent in FLL, apparently the policy is to keep FF itineraries on the same carrier, but depending on the agent, different things can happen.

F on a US 734 reminds me that the ghetto bird still exists on UA.

It was probably the authorization for the stay (guaranteed) plus any incidentals that may have accrued throughout your stay. For example, at the Hilton, a CC authorization was processed for $348, which was double the actual paid amount.

After listening to the poor lady at the checkout explain to 3 separate cash-paying guests  that there would be a $50 hold on their debit cards for a few days until their bank released it, I can confirm that the Hyatt added $50 holds for incidentals that should drop off and never post.

Especially incorrect with a program like Aeroplan, where Air Canada and Aeroplan actually exchange cash for miles and flights with each other...

The sign rotating on the screen near checkin also stated $50 above room and taxes... first time I have ever seen it explicitly stated along with Marketing notices.

Thats what happens when you ask! ;)

Better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission!
