What a strange location for an Aloft. We once had a Sheraton over here. Seems more like Westin or Sheraton should be over there. I would think an Aloft would go somewhere on/near the Beach.

Well, it's 6 blocks from water. There's another one slated for Doral that will be miles from the ocean.

It could be that the property is too small for the 'mainstream' brands. Strictly guessing: There might have been financial incentives offered (by the developer and mabe even job creation offsets, etc) that made the opening fiscally attractive.

Other than budget-conscious business travelers and pre-cruise travelers, people attending live events downtown (AA Arena, or live music at Tobacco Road, etc) might generate some room nights (they can always use Priceline, which is especially popular with the pre-cruiser group).

Having worked for a decade about a mile from this location, I'd say this area of commercial developments (low-rise bank buildings and and large warehouses) is even more curious from Aloft's "target demographic" stabdpoint.

However, I think it shows that Aloft has a "dual identity" - it can be both a "baby W" and simultaneously a "value-rpiced business hotel" in the Hyatt Place mode. That commercial area is under-served by national chains: a TownePlace by Marriott is a few blocks away and a Hampton Inn/Suites is a couple of miles further west, adjacent to the Turnpike entrance/exit; also, the Doral golf resort, Hyatt Blue and IC ere maybe 3-4 miles away to the east, but at higher price points.

For many locations, I think that it has to be both. I question whether they've combined these two needs as well as they should, though.

I think so and it seems to be already open and operating as a Starwood. I don't know when this happened, but I assume it's very recent.

I am quite certain that it's webpage on starwoodhotels.com was not active when I posted about it less than a week ago!

I was going to guess within the last month, but now I realize that I checked spg.com for Minnesota and didn't see it on the list just before Easter weekend.
