SPG Hotels Coming and Going

The Four Points by Sheraton Phoenix North (aka Metrocenter) left Starwood August 15, 2011. The property was bought a few months ago by Prime Hotels and Resorts. Once that happened things went downhill rapidly. It is now re-flagged as the InnPlace Phoenix. Their summer rates were among the least expensive Starwood property in the world. It was great for mattress runs but I pity people who actually stayed there.

I was poking around on the SPG website today and found reference to the Westin Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam scheduled to open in December 2012.

The hotel will be participating in SPG at Category 3 and is accepting reservations as of today, September 14, 2011, for future dates on or after January 17, 2012. Awesome! I'm VERY excited about this! I was SO disappointed when the plans originally fell through for the Westin Snowmass. I'm not clear about this "independent" hotel; will it join SPG, I hope?

Could the independent property be a condo-type vacation village? IIRC there's a residences at the Phoenician (AZ) that sounds like a very upscale version of this. The designation could also mean that it's a hotel like the older one in Boston that just uses Starwood as a reservation service but doesn't participate in SPG for earning or redeeming points.

Both are logical theories, but the first is not the case for this property. It's actually a lesser property. $99 just before Christmas. $199 during Christmas/NY week. $179 at the end of Feb. Someone else may know if a renovation could make a difference.

It is a good idea, and the transportation company is the same for a few of the hotels, I know the W, St Regis and Laguna share drivers. The problem is the traffic, going from the W to St Regis can take well over an hour at certain times.

The Sheraton Kuta looks pretty good, the ads at the site showcase some of the eco-friendly features of the upcoming hotel.
