Everything in Japan is different. I knew this from previous trips but this past weekend I made the trek to Narita Japan with a ticket I had rebooked due to the earthquake/tsunami and was reminded again how different. When the shuttle bus arrived at the hotel, there was a row of hotel employees lined up to greet the bus, bowing as the door opened with respect that we had chosen their hotel and they were honored. That's different. Later as I decided to turn in for the night, I made a trip to the bathroom and then stood up to flush the toilet. How strange that there are buttons to push rather than a flush handle; that's different. I pushed the button but to my surprise, a fountain of water gushed up to the ceiling spraying water everywhere. Anxious to stop the geyser, I pushed the other button. Now said fountain was lovely "warm" water still hitting the ceiling. It was dark but I could see there were two more button options. Pushing the next one did nothing but I managed to step into the sky-rocketing water blast; at least it was warm. Hitting the last button, the pink one, was the magic action that stopped the waterfall. Thank goodness. I also managed to find the flush handle after a little more searching. I obviously do not have the skills to operate a Japanese toilet. My trip continued with a visit to a beautiful temple, sticky rice on a stick, taking off my shoes to enter a dressing room to try on pants that were already short enough for me without the usual alterations, and cold noodles for breakfast. Oh yes, and people are respectful and nice wherever you go. That's different.
It sounds like in the dark of the night you may have stumbled into the hallway and found the hotel fountain, not your bathroom. That’s why there were so many buttons, an easy mistake to make. Seriously sounds like a interesting trip!
It did have the shower options; that's how he/she sprayed the ceiling after hitting the wrong buttons.
Yes, and I love the heated toilets which I first experienced in Korea. They feel so good on a chilly damp day. Did your room have a self-filling bathtub too, which plays music when the bath has been drawn?
