USA Today: WestJet to launch regional unit with Q400 turboprops

Canadian low-cost carrier WestJet announced today that it will add Bombardier Q400 turboprops to its fleet.

That announcement ends nearly three months of speculation that began when the carrier said in January that it was considering the creation of a regional airline unit.

Such a unit is meant to help WestJet – Canada's second-biggest carrier – expand into markets that are too small for WestJet to serve with its current 737-only fleet. It also is expected to ratchet up competition with Air Canada, that nation's biggest airline.
