If you are a smoker getting on, or just gotten off, a long flight -- and especially if you have a connection between two flights -- it is a big help if you can grab a smoke in the airport.

If you know of any airports which allow it (airside), please post them here. (Any time that someone posts in this thread, I will update this post to include that information. Also, if you know that an airport does not allow smoking anywhere, please post that and I will include it in Post # 2.)

AKL -- AKL - Smoking outside on the "roof".

AMS -- Multiple Plexiglas smoking boxes.

ATH -- Smoking is allowed in the downstairs food court.

ATL -- There are smoking areas in all of the terminals and at least one restaurant (the Heineken) which allows smoking. (See Kahoutek's post, below, for more details.)

AUA - Smoking in the bar subject to a purchase

BCN -- T1: outside area on the gate level right below the *A lounge.

BKK -- enclosed smoking rooms in the international areas. Domestic no longer has smoking areas.

    BOM -- Smoking room.

BRS -- Outside smoking areas after security check.

CAI -- Smoking lounge second floor.

    CPH -- The Servisair lounge.

    DEL-- Smoking room.

DOH -- Smoking in Business Lounge, smoking room.

DPS -- International. departures: the lounge has an outside smoking area with nice runway views. Some public bars allow smoking as well.
Domestic departures: has enclosed smoking cabins and the coffee shop will supply ashtrays as well.

DXB -- Smoking in EK Business Lounge and Silver Lounge. Smoking in at least 2 bars, ask at reception.
GVA -- A smoking lounge is provided airside. It's upstairs straight in front of the escalators, sponsored by Japan Tobacco Inc.

CVG -- Smoking lounges are located in the ticketing areas of Terminals 1, 2 and 3, as well as in Concourse B near the food court and in Concourse C. Many bars and restaurants also offer designated smoking areas.

    DEN -- Aviators' Bar.

DFW -- terminal A and D Admirals clubs.

DUB -- T1 - airside, upstairs over The Loop shopping area, the bar has an outside "garden" for smokers.

FCO -- There is one smoking area in Terminal 3. I have been told that there is another in the domestic terminal but I haven't managed to find it.

FRA -- Glassed in smoking rooms in the LH/Star Alliance terminal.

HAM -- Lufthansa Senator Lounge has a small room to the left and a terrace connected to the lounge. The same is true for the Biz/Silver lounge.

HKG -- Numerous smoker's rooms every 15 gates or so.

IAD -- Terminal C: Smoking room near Gate C4.
Terminal D: Smoking room near gate D29/30 (if you have the time, use this room vs C4 as it's 2x the size and has much better ventilation.
Terminal B: Smoking room near gate B35/36 (or there abouts) Very small and drab but it fits the bill.

ICN -- A few scattered around, including JAL lounge.

JNB -- Smoking lounges in the international area and some airline lounges allow it also (SAA for example and the Diners club lounge, but not BA / OneWorld, Virgin Clubhouse or Qantas Shared lounge)

KIX -- Many smoking rooms airside, such as in the duty free area, near several of the gates and in some of the airline lounges.

LAD - Common smoking room upstairs departure level.

NCL -- Outside smoking areas after security check.

NRT -- Numerous smoking rooms, including the Sakura F lounge.

PEK -- Smoking room and Air China lounge has a smoking area.

    PNH -- Smoking room.

PRG -- A few restaurants in both T1 and T2 allow smoking.

    PVG -- One small room.

SAL -- In the Taca lounge.

SCL - Smoking in the bar, subject to a US$5 minimum charge. (Also smoking allowed in the LAN lounge.)

SIN: -- Terminal 1, Departure Transit Lounge West, Level 3.
Terminal 2, Departure Transit Lounge North and South, Level 2.
Terminal 3, Departure Transit Lounge North and South, Level 2.
Terminal 3, adjacent to the SKL is an outside patio area. It's covered to protect from rain

Budget Terminal, Outdoor terrace located at the Departure Transit Lounge.
The SQ lounges in T2 have smoking areas within the lounges.

SDQ - Iberia lounge is the only smoking room airside. (OW status/flight required).

SLC -- Smoking lounges are located on the lower levels of both Concourses A and B, near gates C8 and D1, and in the Concourse E lobby.

STL -- One room in Concourse C.

TLV -- Smoking is allowed in at least two rooms in the departures area (after the final Security check).

    TPA -- Patios.

VCE -- Upstairs near the Pilsner Urquell restaurant/bar. Enclosed smoking room with special ventilation system.

WDH - Smoking only in the lounge. US $20 to gain access if you are not a member.

ZRH -- The smoking lounges provided by a tobacco company.

INDONESIA (other than DPS): UPG, BMU, KOE, LBJ, MOF, AMQ, SOQ, TNC, etc. all have smoking rooms in the gate areas and the coffee shops all supply ashtrays when you sit down and order a coffee.

I took your suggestion and edited the OP to make clear that we are talking about airside only.

As far as the FT thread is concerned, I don't feel comfortable in taking information posted there without the poster's specific permission.

Thank you Dovster and everyone for this thread. I am not a smoker but my husband is and whatever I can do to ease his traveling cranky pants will be great. Now if there was only a thread addressing hotels WITH smoking rooms--harder and harder to find these days so he has to smoke his pipe outside somewhere. Not all bad from my POV.;)

Oddly enough, Italian national law also bans smoking in all airports, yet FCO continues to allow it. MXP used to have an "unofficial" smoking area behind the food court, but when the law went into effect a few years ago it stopped that.

I don't smoke, but I did notice that there is a pretty darned nice cigar lounge in the FRA first class departure building.

    Fra_lh_terminal_cigarlounge.jpg

The cigar lounge also has its own bar. Very nice.

    FRA_LH_FCT_Cigar2.jpg

I have no idea if you can smoke cigarettes in this lounge.

In SIN, there's an outdoor smoking porch, open 24/7, in T3 on the mezzanine level between the SQ SilverKris lounge and the Star Alliance Gold lounge. It should have good tarmac views.

You can also smoke in the sunflower garden and cactus garden, also outdoor on the mezzanine level in T2 and T1. These should also be open 24/7 and have good views.

I don't think people smoke much anymore in Seattle. At least not in my life. I can go for weeks on end without seeing or smelling smoke.

This became very obvious to me in Switzerland, where it seemed like everyone was smoking almost everywhere we went. It doesn't bother me, I just noticed it.

When I smoked, there were no restrictions. When they made rules against smoking on the plane, I quit, which is a good thing as I fear I would be a very serious cranky pants going without for 8-10 hours. ;)
