I'm new here and have looked around, but searching for "points" on a site like this isn't helpful. What are these points, and is there a guide for them? Are they like achievements for using the site in particular ways? I have 15, I assume for my two status achievements?
Welcome to Milepoint. some answers to your questions are here: http://milepoint.com/forums/help/trophies
Welcome to Milepoint! Here is the guide: http://milepoint.com/forums/help/trophies (edit to add- I was so busy being wordy that my friend M&S beat me to the link. For that I give hime one like, which will contribute in an infinitesimal way to his future status). Basically, the points are awarded for participation, and lead to reaching levels (silver, gold, whatever) that bring some small gifts and increased access to certain features. (for example, I believe you have to be silver to edit the wiki's). Other than that, they are fun, meaningless, charming, annoying, or however you want to view them. We're all here on milepoint because of our fascination with miles and points, so we might as well play with points here too! So poke around the site, start asking or answering questions or just chatting socially and the points will take care of themselves.
Thank you! That's helpful. Is there anything more specific about how points accumulate? About how many you need for each status tier? Or is that supposed to be part of the fun?
The algorithm shifts unpredictably. (we refer to it as Al Gorithm). Factors include likes, posts, and time (how long since you registered). We've heard there are 12 factors, but from what I can tell the software only supports 4 factors. Early on we tried to document it all, there are a couple old threads in the beta feedback forum (which is locked but still visible). Part of our nature as mile/point freaks is to try to crack the system, so we keep trying. Some members leave their info visible (click on my handle, then on my status points number), others set their privacy settings to hide that info. But YMMV (your mileage may vary).
If you click on my name, then click on the number of status points I have you will see a list of all the status points I have gained and how I gained them. You can do this for any member how has a public profile (some people have chosen to hide this info). Basically you accumulate status points by posting and by receiving likes, and few more for how long you've been on Milepoint. How many you need for each status tier has changed a bit, and I'm not remembering the details. As Gargoyle has said, the points will come as you participate. I feel the best strategy is to have fun, learn and share and let the status tiers be sweet little extras. And to give you a bit of an incentive, I will say that I have found Randy and Milepoint to be very generous with these extras.
tag, you're it! oh, and one other very minor thing- points appear at 40 minutes past the hour, when the server does a "sweep".
And on Milepoint we receive likes and points for posts that are obseen and absurd as much (or more) as we do for those much rarer posts which are intelligent and helpful.
Wow, your status points are pretty obseen too. I must be living under a rock, or just think I should follow those posts that are "intelligent and helpful" Maybe I took the tequila tasting thread too seriously this evening? Nah but the Vodka and Tonics aren't too bad.
Wow, Who am I to argue with you, Elevated one level, exactly like you said, and in less than 3 minutes. Obviously I need to come around here more often, instead of being just a lurker. G, can I ask, were you at the Chicago Do last week? BTW, Thanks for the boost.
Nope, I was backed up with work, couldn't take the time off. Weekends are when I really get the most done.
Trust me on this one, I can assure you, I am much older than you, work 48 to 60 hours a week, take the work with me where ever I go, two 17 inch lappys, (heavy) work where ever I happen to be, I'll be in my office by 6 CST in the morning, and this site will be on one of the 3 computers in my office. I do find time to go where and when I want to, but the work goes too. I think it is just great we have the "net' cell phones and real telephones, so that, those of of who do work for a living, can go, and still stay on top of business. Yes, I can still do it, at my age, and still do a MR - just cuz I can
I really like week ends. The phone will only ring when there is a real problem (trouble). It is nice and quiet, and a working person, who is dedicated, (probably the owner of the buss) can really get some work done. Play catch-up, rest, surf, Well, if you're in that position, you already know.
Welcome to MP, Gargoyle is the resident expert of all things. Never wrong the man who works with stone.......
Slightly related, but is anyone noticing their points count not updating? I just sort of noticed my points count not changing lately, whether it be whenever I post or get 'liked'.
I assume you mean aside from the "updates only happen on the 40 minute mark of each hour" issue mentioned above, right? It seems you only get points for meeting certain thresholds of likes/posts - maybe you haven't met them?
Ah! For some reason I thought the points were given on a 1-1 ratio to the posts and likes. I just learned something new about MP today!
