Even though I am the victim of a vast conspiracy to keep me from my Divine Right to Silver status cool , I have to say I find the inscrutible workings of Mr. Al Gorithm to be somewhat fun. I still play video games (go ahead, you can judge, I don't care ), and I think of it a lot like Achievements in those games-- when you unlock them unexpectedly, it's really fun, and makes you want to try more things to see what else you can unlock!
Just curious... have you looked in the off-topic forums to see if anything "new" appears? There are secrets there. Also, head to the MP store to claim your Sliver gifts.
I tried going to the store when I got the alert, but when I do, it tells me I have not reached the appropriate status. It's an outrage, I tell you!

Amazing! First Silver status that was never recognized and then they made you Active Member all over again. It sounds like the algorithm is changing and you were unfortunately caught in the middle.
there are two different usages of "active member"... one is a bridge between new member and silver, and the other is a point award that seems linked to the density of activity in a limited time period. You have achieved both, so you're a doubly active personality.
Well, I finally realized what I've been missing by not posting here earlier-- I joined in April of last year, kind of forgot about it until recently, and now am enjoying the very welcoming community!

Silver is incomparable. Don't forget to order your luggage tags in the awards store. You can also ask the House of Miles to laminate a business card for a mini tag. Mine just arrived today. It creates the illusion that I am a businessperson.
