Starwood Preferred Guest Glossary
A glossary of terms used frequently in the Starwood | Preferred Guest forum on milepoint.
BAR ("Best Available Rate") -- A rate type that is not necessarily the best available rate. Some discount rates are calculated as a percentage discount off of the BAR rate.
C&P (Cash and Points) - An award type in which the guest pays a cash supplement with a reduced number of Starpoints. Starpoints or elite credit are NOT earned on C&P award nights. Most hotels offer this award type, but they do not have to offer it.
Eligible Rate - To be defined in an FAQ.
Eligible Stay - To be defined in an FAQ.
Fifth Night Free - An award type in which the fifth consecutive award night is free. C&P awards are not eligible for Fifth Night Free.
FRN (Free Resort Nights) - the "generic" name for a promotion that SPG first ran in May - July 2011 that gives one free night (redeemable at most SPG resorts) after 3 separate stays (at any SPG-participating property in the chain).
FWN (Free Weekend Nights) - the "generic" name for a promotion that SPG has run in past years that gives one free night (redeemable at certain SPG properties) after 2 or 3 separate stays (at any participating SPG property in the chain).
Instant Awards - In-hotel awards which can be redeemed directly at some hotels for in-hotel benefits such as breakfasts, massages, dining credits, etc.
Nights & Flights - An award type in which Starpoints are redeemed for 50,000 airline miles and a five-night stay at a Category 3 or Category 4 property.
Quarterly Promo - This usually refers to a promotion offered by SPG Corporate. Such promotions are not necessarily "quarterly" and do not usually correspond exactly to calendar-year quarters. There are often gaps between promos, and they usually are not announced until shortly before they are scheduled to begin.
RACK rate -- A rate type that is the official standard maximum room rate at a property. Some discount rates are calculated as a percentage discount off of the RACK rate. At certain properties, SPG Platinum guests can pay the RACK rate to get a standard room at sold out hotels. It is often difficult to find a hotel's RACK rates on spg.com.
Resort - To be defined. (Not every resort has "Resort" in its name. Every hotel with "Resort" in its name is not necessarily a resort, though SPG Corporate seems to usually discourage hotels from using misleading property names.)
SET (Starwood Executive Traveler) = companies who can commit to more than 100+ room nights per year.
SET codes - Numbers assigned to companies and organizations for booking their discount rates. These codes are also sometimes used for special marketing rates and affiliations such as AAA. Discounts vary and are not necessarily the lowest rate.
SPG50 - An award type for a room at 50% off RACK rate. Starpoints and elite credit ARE earned on SPG50 awards. SPG50 awards can only be reserved by contacting an SPG representative. SPG50 awards are not necessarily the lowest rate. Properties do not have to offer the SPG50 rate.
SPB (Starwood Preferred Business) = companies who can commit to less than 100 room nights per year.
Specialty Suite - To be defined.
Standard Room - To be defined.
Standard Suite - To be defined.
Status Match - SPG stopped offering status matches on April 1, 2011. SPG has instead implemented a Stay Challenge format.
SVO (Starwood Vacation Ownership) - Starwood's timeshare program. SVO properties have limited participation in the SPG program.
T&Cs (Terms and Conditions) - SPG T&Cs. Promos may also have their own T&Cs.
VIP - An unpublished, invitation-only elite level above Platinum. VIP benefits are the same as Platinum except that upgrades may be confirmed in advance.
Weekend Night - Definition varies. For some offers, this means Friday and Saturday nights. For some offers, Sunday also is included.
