MERIDIAN, Idaho (KBOI) - A Meridian man is charged with carrying 180 lbs. of marijuana on a small plane.

Unitah County deputies arrested 56-year-old Randall Patrick Watson at Vernal Regional Airport in eastern Utah on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Authorities in eastern Utah say they responded to the airport in Vernal, Utah about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a tip from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Officials say a Naples police K-9 walked around the plane and indicated that there might be drugs inside.

Officers say they obtained a search warrant and found four large duffle bags filled with compressed plastic packages of marijuana.

Uintah County under sheriff John Laursen says authorities found nearly 200 pounds of the drug, which could see for about $436,000.

Did this guy think for some reason that the '60's, '70's, or '80's had returned? This is world-class dumb! I guess that he wasn't flying high enough! :D

He probably figured that TSA & police would be concentrating on commercial aircraft & have no reason to check his small private plane! Who ever heard of terrorists using their own plane or even a rental plane??
Gee, I bet they must have been tipped off by someone.

The novelist Nelson Demille has! In his book "The Lion", published in 2010, he presents a scenario where a Libyan assassin/terrorist freely travels around the US doing bad deeds, and flying freely in private jets. No so difficult to imagine, and a point that Mr. Demille wanted to make about a gap in our national security.

This guy should've read more about private airplanes being searched. There are a couple articles out there talking about severe abuse of power in random searches of private planes. So this guy might have just gotten "lucky" in that he actually had crap on him.

Most interesting question to me would be where DHS got the information from which to provide the tip.
