Buying IHG points at 0.5 ¢ each can be a smart move when you redeem them for stays that deliver more than that cost per point.
Hotel stays that exceed the 0.5 ¢ per‑point threshold
- InterContinental Miami – 50,000 points bought at 0.5 ¢ each (≈ $250) can be redeemed for a night that normally costs $351, giving a value of about 0.72 ¢ per point Your Mileage May Vary .
- Holiday Inn Express – 30,000 points (≈ $150) cover a night with a cash rate of $175, yielding roughly 0.58 ¢ per point Your Mileage May Vary .
- High‑end resorts – Redemptions that have delivered around 0.75 ¢ per point have been reported for premium properties in Europe Boarding Area .
PointBreaks promotions – ultra‑low‑point award nights
- 5,000‑point nights – Book a hotel for $25 using only 5 K points, which translates to 0.5 ¢ per point or better FrequentMiler Miles to Memories .
- 10,000‑point nights – $50 for a stay, also meeting the 0.5 ¢ per‑point break‑even point FrequentMiler .
- 15,000‑point nights – $75 for a night, again at or above the 0.5 ¢ value FrequentMiler .
Bonus structures that boost value
- 4th‑night‑free benefit on award stays cuts the effective points needed to roughly 3,750 / 7,500 / 11,250 points for the same $25 / $50 / $75 nights, raising the per‑point value well above 0.5 ¢ FrequentMiler .
- 15 % discount on award nights for elite members further lowers the points cost, pushing the value into the 0.55‑0.72 ¢ range PointsMath .
- Room upgrades and elite perks can add extra worth, making the purchase price of 0.5 ¢ per point a net gain when the upgraded stay is valued higher than the base rate PointsMath .
When the math works out
Any redemption that consistently returns more than 0.5 ¢ per point—whether a premium hotel night, a PointBreaks low‑point stay, or an elite‑enhanced award—makes buying IHG points at the half‑cent price worthwhile.
IHG Wants You to Buy Points—But Should You?
IHG One Rewards is having another points sale. This isn’t breaking news as IHG One Rewards frequently offers promotions on purchasing points, selling them at a discount. As a result, unless I need to stock up, I don’t feel the need to proactively purchase them. Like the last few rounds of point sales, the offer you receive is targeted. Many members, including my wife Sharon, were targeted for a bonus of up to 100% on purchased points. (is an offer really “just for you” if it’s offered to thousands of people?) This promotion runs until 11:59 PM
IHG Points: How Much Are They Worth for Frequent Flyers?
Over the years, I’ve poured through countless traveler reports, industry releases, and even some specialized data from 2024 that evaluated hotel loyalty programs. If I’ve learned anything from these numbers, it’s that a little strategy goes a long way—especially when combining promotions or credit card bonuses. In 2025, frequent flyers still debate whether IHG points stand out enough to justify directing their stays toward IHG. My own research tells me

IHG PointBreaks now live
IHG will be putting up their next set of PointBreaks hotels on Monday, July 23rd, 2018. That’s different than usual as the current PointBreaks are valid through 7/31. Still, with only slim pickin’s left on that list, it will be nice to see a new list. As a reminder, PointBreaks now have three tiers, so properties will cost 5K, 10K, or 15K points per night depending on the property.
