Elite status matches and challenges are tools that travel companies use to attract and retain high‑value customers.
Status Matches
- A status match grants you the same elite tier on a new airline or hotel chain that you already hold with a competitor, allowing you to keep benefits without starting from the bottom.
- Companies typically offer the match for a limited time (often 90 days) and may require you to maintain a reduced amount of activity to keep the status after the trial period.
- The purpose is to make it easier for profitable customers to switch brands, driving incremental business for the provider.
Status Challenges
- A status challenge lets you earn a higher elite tier more quickly by completing a compressed set of requirements, such as a reduced number of nights or points within a three‑month (or similar) period.
- Unlike a match, you do not receive the new status automatically; you must meet the challenge criteria before the end of the period to be awarded the status.
- Challenges often do not count award nights or points toward the requirement, and you may be limited to a certain number of rooms or flights per stay.
- Participants usually cannot have completed a challenge for the same tier in the previous five years and must not have done a challenge before for that program.
- Registration is typically done by contacting the loyalty program (e.g., via email) and selecting a start window; the challenge can sometimes begin retroactively or the month after registration.
- Some programs tie challenges to loyalty points rather than flights, and may offer fee‑free or fee‑based options depending on the member’s profile.
- Timing the start of a challenge can affect how long the earned status lasts, with earlier starts often extending the benefit into the following membership year.
Starwood Elite Status Challenges are Now Public
Starwood Preferred Guest elite status matches in March 2011 and replaced them with ‘status challenges’. Instead of giving you elite status because you’re an elite with another hotel chain, they let you earn status more quickly — fewer nights in a compressed period of time — though they don’t advance you the status while you’re working on the challenge. That program is no longer a secret, information passed from frequent flyer to frequent flyer, or something you stumble upon if asking Starwood whether there’s a way they can help you move your business to them from another chain.
Starwood Offering Elite Status Challenges But Only Through June 30
Starwood Preferred Guest eliminated elite status matches in March 2011 and replaced them with ‘status challenges’. I wrote about the change right before that happened, and it’s what prompted Lucky from One Mile at a Time to start staying with Starwood. He’s since done 500 nights with them. Status challenges let you earn status more quickly — fewer nights in a compressed period of time — though in Starwood’s case they don’t advance you the status while you’re working on the challenge. The challenge program is no longer a secret, information passed from frequent flyer to frequent flyer,
Free American Airlines Lounge Access if You Have United or Delta Status
Last year I wrote How to Get – and Use – Airline Status Matches. Travel providers are interested in acquiring their competitors’ best customers, but elite status has a lock-in effect. Sure, you might want to defect from United to American or from Delta to Alaska, but it’s pretty tough to do that and start from scratch with a new airline. You’re well treated as an elite, and it’s rough out there flying without any status (although now the bottom tier of status can be approximated in many cases with the airline’s co-branded credit card). So airlines

For a primer on airline status (for those who are unfamiliar) read this first. A status match is when a competing company wants to “steal” your business away from the competition. Elite status holders won’t abandon free upgrades, drinks,
Use Your Southwest Companion Pass To Get Top Status With Other Airlines
The Southwest Companion Pass is almost certainly one of the greatest airline perks around – the benefit that allows the pass holder to designate another person to fly free (excluding the taxes) with them on all flights. But, you can also leverage this Pass for actual elite status with other airlines as well! Here is what you need to know. Matching Elite Status to Other Airlines Most airlines that extend an offer to match elite status actually offer challenges with the status. That means that you demonstrate to a particular airline that you hold comparable status with another
Delta Skymiles Bringing Back Elite Status Match
In January I outlined how you can take elite status with one airline and get another airline to give you status, too. Some just straight up give you the status, others require you to fly a certain amount to earn it on an expedited basis. But it’s entirely common for airlines to want to do what they can to poach the best customers of their competitors. Delta even lists the opportunity on its website, but the website indicated the offer runs through June 30, 2013. They’ll give you status (up to Platinum, based on your current status
When To Start Airline & Hotel Elite Status Matches
One of the savvier moves a frequent, or even remotely frequent traveller can make is to sign up for a status challenge. To put it simply, these challenges are an expedited way to earn a full array of travel perks, without doing all the usually required work over a year. You pretty much just red line it for a few weeks or months to prove yourself. But “when” you start an elite status challenge with an airline or hotel can make up to a year of difference in how long you get to retain it, should you complete it
