Booking flights with frequent‑flyer miles is done through the airline’s award‑booking system rather than a regular cash reservation.
Steps to Book an Award Flight with Miles
- Log into your frequent‑flyer account on the airline’s website or the partner airline’s site where your miles are held.
- Choose the “award” or “use miles” option, then select the cabin class, destination cities, and travel dates you prefer. 🔗
- Review the calendar of availability that shows dates with discounted mileage pricing and pick a flight that has award seats open. 🔗
- Confirm the reservation and complete the booking, following any prompts to finalize the award ticket.🔗
Tips and Considerations
- If the airline’s website does not display award seats for a partner carrier, you may need to call the airline’s reservations center to complete the booking.
- Award bookings generally do not earn additional frequent‑flyer miles or elite‑status points for the flight you purchase with miles. 🔗
- Using miles for a flight means you forgo the cash fare, so be aware that you won’t receive the usual mileage accrual for that segment.🔗

I had heard of miles, points and frequent flyer miles before, but that trip was the impetus for me to get serious about it. I opened a few credit cards, and used the signup bonuses to accrue 140,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points to get a free flight for my family of 8 to Lake Tahoe
