Here’s an overview of recent business class seating designs and configurations across several airlines.
Innovative Seat Concepts
- The Butterfly seat can transform two premium‑economy seats into a lie‑flat business class suite with a chair and couch, and it has won both the IATA Passenger Innovation Award and the Crystal Cabin Award.
- Discover Airlines’ new interior features a 1‑2‑1 layout with direct aisle access, and about half of the seats are paired as couples with an adjustable privacy divider that can be set for shared or private use. 🔗
- Their seats convert into a flat bed offering a 2‑metre sleeping space, providing greater privacy and additional storage compared with earlier designs.🔗
Recent Airline Implementations
- Singapore Airlines’ A380 business class seats are 25 inches wide, include side wings for back support, and recline directly into a 78‑inch full‑flat bed that can be positioned in a “sun‑deck” mode for entertainment.
- The seats use a carbon‑fibre composite shell, which creates more under‑seat stowage space for a full‑size cabin bag and a laptop bag. 🔗
- Air France’s B777‑300ER business class pods feature privacy doors, a larger storage table, wireless phone‑charging docks, and 17.3‑inch 4K anti‑glare screens with Bluetooth connectivity. 🔗
- Row 1 and row 9 on this aircraft provide a massive footwell and extra room due to their bulkhead positions. 🔗
- Lufthansa’s A350 business class offers 38 seats with individual aisle access and fully flat capability, arranged in five configurations: suite, extra‑long bed, “throne” extra‑space seat, double seat, and standard seat. 🔗
- Etihad’s A321LR business class uses a reverse herringbone layout, converting seats into 78‑inch fully flat beds with 17.3‑inch personal entertainment screens, but omits privacy doors to preserve range performance. 🔗
- Iberia’s A321XLR business class seats are 21 inches wide, lack privacy doors yet provide a private enclosure, and can be angled into a wide variety of positions via side‑wall controls. 🔗
- British Airways’ Embraer E190 Club Europe business class seats have a notably comfortable cushion, but seat location varies widely, with the cabin sometimes ending as far forward as row 5 despite a potential range up to row 11 or 12.🔗
Seat Configurations and Features
- The prevailing 1‑2‑1 configuration continues to dominate, granting each passenger direct aisle access and facilitating privacy.
- Some airlines, such as Singapore and Emirates, offer the ability to create double beds by lowering a centre divider, catering to couples or families traveling together. 🔗
- Privacy doors are common in long‑haul cabins like Air France’s, but are omitted in several narrow‑body designs (e.g., Etihad, Iberia) to reduce weight and maintain aircraft range. 🔗
- Storage solutions have evolved, with carbon‑fibre shells and larger under‑seat compartments allowing passengers to stow cabin bags and laptops more conveniently. 🔗
- Entertainment screens range from 17.3‑inch to 18‑inch high‑definition displays, often complemented by HDMI, iPod inputs, and multiple power outlets or USB ports. 🔗
- Seat width varies, with examples including 21‑inch seats on Iberia’s A321XLR, 25‑inch seats on Singapore’s A380, and adjustable privacy dividers that can transform seats into suites or couples’ configurations.🔗

The Next Generation Business Class Seat?
Business class seats are a perfect way to travel by air. It gives a level of comfort that allows for comfortable sleep, work, and dining. Airlines are constantly trying to improve those seats to be in a better position to gain more revenue from their purchase. These seats could be perfect for that – and for us! We have seen airlines removing first class seats to add more seats in their place. They have bumped up their premium economy seats as well as adding regular coach seats so they don’t mind sacrificing first class for adding more people. There

Trip Report: Air France B777-300/ER New Business Class and Premium Economy
I tried out Air France's new retrofitted B777-300/ER from Paris to New York JFK recently. The newly configured Air France B777-300/ER has 48 Business Class suites, 48 Premium Economy class seats and 273 Economy seats. Passengers were greeted by Air France employees holding posters of the newly refurbished cabin. Business Class cabin has 1-2-1 individual pod seats added with a privacy door. The Business Class seats are similar to Air France's current long-haul B777 seats. There are 48 seats spanning across 2 cabins. The second cabin feels more private with just 5 rows of seats.

Trip Report: The New Lufthansa Allegris A350 Flight
I joined the inaugural flight of Lufthansa featuring new Allegris products from Munich to Vancouver. The newly delivered Airbus A350 has a completely new cabin makeover. The inaugural flight was LH476 from Munich to Vancouver on 1 May. There was a welcome reception at the gate before boarding. A short speech was made by Lufthansa Airlines Chief Commercial Officer, Heiko Reitz. Baskerball legend Dirk Nowitzki (7 Foot tall) was the guest of honour to try out the 2.2m long bed in Business Class. There are a total of 38 Business Class seats, all of them offer

Review: Etihad First Class Airbus A321LR (KTI-AUH)
For the next portion of my Iceland to The Residence via Cambodia trip, it was time to fly Etihad Airways’ Airbus A321LR first class on the 6hr40min flight from to Phnom Penh Techo (KTI) to Abu Dhabi (AUH). The A321LR is a new addition to Etihad’s fleet, and it’s the carrier’s first “premium” narrow body plane, intended to be used in medium haul markets. I was so excited about this flight, as it’s incredibly rare to find a “true” first class on a narrow body plane. To be honest, I was very pleasantly surprised by the experience. The
