You can upgrade a Premium Economy ticket to Business Class on several airlines, but the rules differ by carrier and by whether the ticket was purchased with cash or earned as an award.
Airlines that allow Premium Economy → Business upgrades
- British Airways lets you upgrade any Premium Economy ticket to Business Class as long as there are upgrade‑eligible seats available in Business.
- Virgin Atlantic offers the same option, permitting upgrades from Premium Economy to Business when points seats exist in the higher cabin. 🔗
- Singapore Airlines lets you use miles to upgrade a purchased Premium Economy fare to Business Class, requiring far fewer miles than a full Business award and still earning miles on the flight.🔗
Airlines that restrict or do not support the upgrade
- American Airlines’ systemwide‑upgrade promotion explicitly states that “Award tickets are not eligible,” meaning you cannot apply an upgrade instrument to a Premium Economy award seat to reach Business.
- On American, upgrades from Main Cabin to Premium Economy are also unavailable for the time being, and the only confirmed upgrade path is from Main Cabin (or Premium Economy) to Business using cash‑paid tickets or systemwide upgrades, not award tickets.🔗

American Airlines Announces the Debut of the Boeing 787-9 and Premium Economy
This morning American announced the launch date for their brand new Boeing 787-9 to go into international service. These are the first planes from a US airline with an international premium economy cabin. Service will commence to Madrid and to Sao Paulo on November 4 with the following schedule. Dallas – Madrid is the inaugural international flight. These flights will be available for booking starting July 10.
