How do elite status matches or challenges work?

Elite status matches and challenges are two common ways loyalty programs let you keep or earn perks when you switch brands.
Status matches
- A match grants you the same tier you already hold with a competing airline or hotel chain, essentially “copy‑pasting” your current elite level into the new program God Save the Points .
- The new program hopes the convenience of retaining your perks will convince you to move all your business to them God Save the Points .
- You usually need to have an active status at the time you request the match; expired or past‑status accounts are typically ignored God Save the Points .
- Hotels also use matches to attract high‑value guests, offering the same tier quickly without requiring you to start from the bottom Points with a Crew .
Status challenges
- A challenge gives you a limited window—often a few months—to meet a set of travel or stay requirements that correspond to the desired tier God Save the Points Running with Miles .
- Unlike a match, you don’t receive the elite tier until you complete the challenge; you may get a temporary “trial” status that expires if you miss the targets Running with Miles .
- The requirements are usually compressed (e.g., fewer nights or flights in a short period) compared with the standard qualification rules View from the Wing .
- Some challenges let you qualify using credit‑card elite status instead of airline or hotel status, expanding eligibility beyond frequent flyers Frequent Flyer Bonuses .
- Successfully finishing a challenge can lock in the new tier for the remainder of the current year and often for the following year as well God Save the Points .
Both approaches let you leverage existing loyalty benefits to jump into a new program, but a match is an immediate transfer of status, while a challenge requires you to earn the tier within a defined timeframe.
Starwood Elite Status Challenges are Now Public
Starwood Preferred Guest elite status matches in March 2011 and replaced them with ‘status challenges’. Instead of giving you elite status because you’re an elite with another hotel chain, they let you earn status more quickly — fewer nights in a compressed period of time — though they don’t advance you the status while you’re working on the challenge. That program is no longer a secret, information passed from frequent flyer to frequent flyer, or something you stumble upon if asking Starwood whether there’s a way they can help you move your business to them from another chain.
Ways to Earn Or Keep Airline Elite Status, Even When Switching Airlines…
Other than meeting my wife and perhaps pay day, few moments compare to receiving complimentary “elite flier” upgrades or receiving those lovely lounge access invitations, even when flying coach. With that said, airlines certainly aren’t making loyalty easy these days. Nearly every airline has managed to either devalue their miles, the ability to earn them or the ability to speak with someone when issues occur. When things become unbearable, as they have recently for many, it is important to know that there are other options. Money talks, and nothing talks louder than directly taking money out of your competitors pocket.
IHG Status Challenge: Match Your Competing Hotel Elite Status
In the aftermath of Marriott Bonvoy, Hyatt acquiring boutique properties and Hilton being Hilton, IHG — home of Intercontinental — is shaking up the elite status quo with an opportunity for any (disgruntled) guests of other chains to match their status, and then complete a challenge to keep it for an extended period. Here’s everything you need to know to elevate your elite status with a new chain and keep it for a year! To take part in the promotion, you must have an account in the USA or the UK and register between June 17 and June
Status match to Wyndham (and why you might want to do it)
Status matching can be a great way to get elite status on the cheap. The reason hotels and airlines offer these types of elite status shortcuts is to potentially try to woo top tier customers over from a competing program. After all, if you have top tier status with say, Delta, you’re generally not going to give that up to start at the bottom with United or any other airline. Hotels and airlines both will occasionally offer either status matches (usually just giving you status) or status CHALLENGES (where you have to meet certain criteria to get / keep the
How to Unlock Elite Airline Status Matches Easily
I’ve spent a lot of time exploring different loyalty programs, and one of the best discoveries I’ve made is how airline status matches let me carry over the elite privileges I’ve worked so hard to earn on one airline into a new loyalty program. From seat upgrades to bonus earning rates, these matches open the door to higher-end experiences wherever my journeys may lead. A status match can be a game-changer when you’re switching to a new carrier for reasons such as relocating, finding better route options, or wanting to experience different alliance perks. I like to think of

If you have elite status with another airline, it may prove helpful to match over to JetBlue, especially if you are able to complete the challenge. That way, you could keep JetBlue status all the way through 2018! Link: Match to JetBlue’s Mosaic Status As status goes, this is not something that many people may get excited about,
Hainan Airlines Fortune Wings Status Match Challenge – Airline and Credit Card Elite status matching!
Hainan Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines Fortune Wings have brought back their elite status match challenge that we saw in 2016. You will need to complete flights on Hainan Airlines (or any of their subsidiary airlines) or even Alaska Airlines to earn status faster than if you don’t take part in the challenge. What is interesting, is that you may not have to hold status with another airline but hold ‘status’ with a credit card. How that works exactly is unknown, if you have a Platinum, Infinite, World Elite, Signature credit card does that
