Are there any upcoming changes in airline rewards that I should be aware of?

United is overhauling its MileagePlus program beginning April 2 2026. Non‑cardholders will see their mileage earn rate drop from 5 miles per dollar to 3 miles per dollar, while United co‑branded cardholders will earn 6 miles per dollar (with higher tiers earning even more)  FrequentMiler . Basic Economy tickets will earn zero miles for anyone without elite status or a United card  Your Mileage May Vary . Cardholders also gain new perks such as at least 10 % off award tickets and expanded access to lower‑priced Saver inventory  Your Mileage May Vary .

Atmos Rewards will boost points earnings on partner airline tickets later in 2026. First‑ and business‑class domestic flights will rise from 125 % to 150 % of the base rate, international business class from 125 % to 250 %, and international first class from 150 % to 250 %  One Mile at a Time .

Qantas is rolling out several status‑related tools in early 2026. A new Classic Reward search engine will launch in March, letting members view availability across Qantas, Jetstar, OneWorld and about 30 partner airlines  2PAXfly . A “Dream Planner” wait‑list‑style feature for high‑tier members will debut alongside the search tool  Wild About Travel . The airline is also retiring the Points Club sub‑program and moving its benefits into the broader status structure  Wild About Travel .

Other carriers have already implemented or announced reward‑related changes that affect upcoming travel. American Airlines stopped awarding miles and Loyalty Points on Basic Economy tickets for bookings made on or after December 17 2025  ATXJetsetter . British Airways announced a modest (≈10 %) increase in award‑flight costs effective December 15 2025, signaling a devaluation of its program  PointsMath .

What to watch:

  • If you fly United, consider obtaining a co‑branded credit card to avoid the reduced earn rates and to access the new discount benefits.
  • For partner‑airline travel, plan to take advantage of Atmos’s higher earn rates once they go live later in 2026.
  • Qantas members should explore the new Classic Reward search and Dream Planner tools as they become available in March 2026 to maximize award seat visibility.
  • Keep an eye on basic‑economy fare policies with American and any future devaluations announced by other airlines.

Airline Credit Cards Used to Be Optional. Not Anymore.
Airline loyalty programs generate billions of dollars in revenue each year from their co-branded credit cards. In many cases, those partnerships with banks are more profitable than selling airline tickets. So it’s no surprise that airlines keep looking for ways to encourage travelers to sign up for their cards. What’s interesting lately is that the three largest U.S. airlines seem to be taking very different approaches. Delta, United, and American are all pushing their credit cards harder than ever—but they’re doing it in very different ways. You could think of it as three different strategies: **Carrot.

Atmos Rewards Points Earning On Premium Partner Tickets Improving
We recently saw the launch of Atmos Rewards, the new combined loyalty program of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. The program is really well thought out, in my opinion, with some unique features you won’t find with many other programs. If you ask me, there was one major weak part to Atmos Rewards when it came to the value of crediting flights to the program, and that’s now going to be addressed. In this post: Atmos Rewards has a lot of airline partners, including oneworld as well as non-oneworld partners. As it currently stands, points earning rates

QANTAS: Frequent Flyer changes evaluated, and when they roll out
Qantas is billing these largely status-related changes as a ‘new era’ for Frequent Flyers. Here’s what’s coming, what I think of it, and when it will arrive. Read on to find out what it means if you’re chasing Silver, protecting Gold or sitting comfortably at Platinum. This is the change I am most excited about. I hope it delivers on its promise: a new Classic Flight Reward search engine. One that shows availability across Qantas, Jetstar, OneWorld, and 30 partner airlines. You’ll be able to search millions of seats across a 12-month window by destination and cabin.

Qantas’ “New Era” For Status
Qantas has just made it more expensive to stay loyal. Funny how that works. The airline is calling it a ‘new era’ for its Frequent Flyer program. I’d call it a quiet price hike dressed up in marketing language. This is a change I’ve been waiting on for months. After Virgin Australia overhauled its own program, this felt inevitable. Here’s what’s actually changing, and what it means for your membership. Qantas made a few smaller changes starting in 2025. These included: This new announcement takes things even further. Qantas says the Frequent Flyer program is “entering an exciting

A coupon book with a credit card, a credit card program with an airline, and more [Week in Review]
I use Google Flights almost daily. Whether I’m actively researching for an upcoming trip, curiously clicking around looking for deals, or just trying to get a general sense of award availability (thanks to the Points Path extension), I pull up the site multiple times each day. However, until recently, I hadn’t employed what is arguably the most useful feature of Google Flights: the ability to track flight prices. In a podcast episode, Greg had almost offhandedly mentioned that he uses that feature all the time. I hadn’t thought much about using it since most of my flying is via

This Points Redemption Delivered an Incredible 4.7 Cents Per Point
Over the years, I’ve been a strong advocate of using transferable points currencies to fuel your travel. Flexible points currencies offer a ton of room as you have multiple options to redeem your points, be it directly through a portal or by transferring points to airline and hotel partners. Card issuers sweeten the deal even further at times by offering points transfer bonuses. In this post, I highlighted how I scored 4 cents per point value out of a recent Membership Rewards points redemption. I just booked another trip and the deal only got sweeter. United MileagePlus announces huge changes to earning and redeeming miles
There’s an oft-repeated joke in travel circles that goes something like this: “Want to know what United is planning for next year? Look at what Delta did last year.” Today, United MileagePlus announced significant changes to how its members would earn and redeem miles, starting April 2nd (studiously avoiding April Fools Day). Essentially, it is following Delta’s lead in using award discounts to encourage customers to hold a United credit card, then going a step further by also giving improved earning rates on paid travel to cardholders. Come Summer, if you want to engage with United MileagePlus in

PointsMath Devaluation YearBook 2025
2025 was a rollercoaster ride in terms of the changes that took place. And, one with the significant award changes resulting in devaluation. Some were moderate, whereas some were shifted to dynamic awards and more. Here is the devaluation 2025 YearBook. This yearbook is meant to remind us that devaluation is part of the journey, and it is always better to earn & burn rather than to hoard miles & points. ## January 2025: Air France-KLM & Marriott ### Air France-KLM Flying Blue - Program: Air France-KLM Flying Blue - Type: Initially No Notice Devaluation - Pullback:

United Airlines Fundamentally Transforms MileagePlus With Credit Card–Driven Loyalty Strategy
United Airlines has announced fundamental changes to MileagePlus, and while the United frames them as enhancements, as it always does, the real story is a structural shift in how loyalty is rewarded. United Airlines has unveiled changes to MileagePlus that will apply to tickets purchased on or after April 2, 2026. While United highlights expanded benefits and new award discounts, the most consequential change is that MileagePlus is becoming far less rewarding for members who do not carry a United credit or debit card. As United seeks to double profits at MileagePlus, this latest move clearly re-frames who
