Alaska Airlines uses the Boeing 737‑900 on a variety of domestic routes, offering a First Class cabin with 16 seats and a mix of Premium and Economy seating.
Cabin Configuration
- The First Class cabin on the 737‑900 features 16 seats arranged in a 2‑2 layout, with seats that are about 21 inches wide and provide roughly 41 inches of pitch for legroom.
- Seats include a footrest that flips down from the seat in front, a 110‑volt universal AC outlet, and a USB‑A port located in the armrest.
- The passenger service unit overhead supplies individual air vents for each seat.
Seating Features
- Alaska’s 737‑900 seats are supplied by Recaro and include a calf‑rest, a new seat‑back device holder, and a 6‑way headrest with neck support.
- Recent upgrades bring USB‑C charging capabilities to the 737‑900ER fleet, standardizing power options across the aircraft.
- More than 95 percent of the airline’s 737‑800, 737‑900 and 737‑900ER aircraft are equipped with power outlets at every seat.
Routes and Service
- Starting January 2025, Alaska began operating 737‑900s on new Oregon routes, each aircraft configured with 16 First Class and 30 Premium Class seats.
- The airline’s coast‑to‑coast service announced in June 2023 also utilizes the 737‑900, maintaining the 16‑seat First Class cabin.
- A new Seattle‑to‑Miami nonstop service, launched in 2021, employs the 737‑900 with a First Class cabin of 16 seats, 24 Premium Class seats, and standard Economy seating.
Fleet and Upgrades
- Alaska’s fleet includes 52 Boeing 737‑900ER aircraft, with an additional 16 on order as of early 2017.
- In 2014 the airline added ten more 737‑900ERs to accelerate the retirement of older 737‑400s and expand its network.
- Ongoing refresh programs are upgrading older 737‑900ERs to match newer Recaro seat specifications, adding personal device holders and USB‑C chargers.
Alaska’s Boeing 737‑900 series thus provides a consistent First Class experience across its routes, supported by modern Recaro seating, ample power options, and recent fleet upgrades that keep the aircraft competitive within the carrier’s all‑Boeing lineup.
Review: Alaska Airlines 737-9 MAX First Class
To attend the Alaska-Boeing event, I flew Alaska Airlines from Chicago (ORD) to Seattle (SEA) onboard a 737-9 MAX in first class and enjoyed a pleasant flight, with the exception of the Wi-Fi onboard. I traveled as a guest of Alaska Airlines. While I have historically turned down these sorts of invitations and did not even know that Alaska Airlines would book me in first class, the cost of tickets to this event plus a nanny for the day would have made this trip to difficult to justify…so feel free to stop here if you think that discredits my
Review: Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-900 First Class (AUS-SAN)
To kick off our trip to San Diego, Mrs. ATX, ATX Jr., and I flew Alaska Airlines’ First Class on the Boeing 737-900 from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) to San Diego International Airport (SAN). When we were planning this trip, Mrs. ATX and I were on the fence about where we wanted to go. Our primary criteria were direct, reasonably priced, First Class flight and a city that both or one of us hadn’t been to before. Seattle and San Diego both looked like viable options but, in order to get a reasonable fare from Seattle, would have
Alaska Airlines Adds Three New Routes from Oregon
Alaska Airlines announced today that it is adding three new routes connecting the state of Oregon to other destinations within its network. Two flights will operate from the airline’s Portland hub and a third connecting Medford with San Diego. The longest of the three flights comes as Alaska connects Portland International Airport (PDX) with George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston. Prior to announcing the flight, Houston was the largest unserved destination from Portland. The flight will be the third nonstop destination for Alaska between Portland and Texas, complimenting flights to Austin (AUS) and Dallas/Ft Worth (DFW). Alaska
Alaska is Expanding Premium Seating Across the Fleet

Starting in September, additional First Class and Premium seats will roll out across Alaska’s Boeing 737-800s, -900ERs, and -9 MAX aircraft. According to the airline, these changes will add 1.3 million premium seats annually to the carrier’s mainline fleet. While changes are rolling out across the Alaska fleet, changes are limited to one cabin per aircraft. Alaska is adding four seats to the First Class cabin on its 737-800s, this will align the First
