There are several award‑chart “sweet spots” that can dramatically stretch the value of your points and miles.

Distance‑based and regional sweet spots

  • British Airways / American or Alaska Airlines – One‑way flights between 2,001 and 3,000 miles cost only 12,500 Avios, making routes like Los Angeles ↔ Kauai (≈2,600 mi) a cheap redemption.  Point Me to the Plane
  • ANA (All Nippon Airways) – Business‑class round‑trip between the U.S. and Japan/Asia can be booked for 90,000 miles or less, with generous award space for members.  FrequentMiler
  • Turkish Airlines – Both its regular and promotional award charts contain multiple “sweet spots” on various routes, though availability can be tighter than on standard awards.  PointsMath

One of the Best Award Chart Sweet Spots You Should Be Taking Advantage Of
With epic weather, amazing scenery, great beaches, and endless outdoor activities, Hawaii has something for everyone. But getting there on points and miles is rarely easy. Even if you can find saver availability to get there on miles, the US-based airlines charge a steep premium, with United and American both charging 45,000 miles round-trip for a saver coach fare from the mainland to Hawaii. This is almost double the 25,000 mile round-trip rate for a normal domestic ticket. This is an ideal time to take advantage of one of the best award chart sweet spots, British Airways’ distance-based award

Practical Sweet Spot Awards
The show must go on. After almost 3 years of Frequent Miler on the Air without missing an episode, I was determined to make it work this week despite some challenges on my end. Listen to this week’s “Giant Mailbag” stand-in for more on that and accept my apologies for unideal sound quality this week as we discuss our favorite practical sweet spots — those you can actually find available and that we have booked. Elsewhere on the blog this week, we’ve updated some excellent resources including our Marriott Bonvoy Complete Guide and some sweet spot best uses

Swapping my Bilt points for Alaska miles
On Monday, July 1, for that day only, Bilt will be offering up to a 100% transfer bonus to Alaska Mileage Plan. That’s awesome. Yes, I know that previous Bilt transfer bonuses have been up to 150% but that has been for programs where there are plenty of other ways to get the miles. Don’t get me wrong, 150% transfer bonuses to Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Emirates Skywards, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club were amazing. But with each of those programs, there are several transferable points programs that support them so if you have transferable points, it’s

DevAAluation Begins – US Airways and American Airlines Sneak It In
This was an inevitable occurrence (in fact, I had another post that was to post about this later today before this news, so check back later for that) but I do not think anyone expected the new American Airlines (with US Airways) to strike a blow at their award chart so soon. That they snuck it in without prior notice makes it even worse. Let me say this first – these initial changes are unlikely to affect the majority of you. The changes do not affect the whole chart for the lower cost awards, so you will be able

BC & Ontario’s 2025 Civic Holiday: Award Travel Highlights
The first Monday in August 2025 is shaping up to be an excellent time for a quick summer escape. I’ve been digging through regional travel stats, and it’s clear that the combined observances of BC Day in British Columbia and the Civic Holiday in Ontario can really open up an array of travel possibilities—especially when looking for fun, budget-friendly getaways. It’s also worth noting that this holiday weekend often provides a great test run for those learning how to optimize mileage programs. In my experience, I’ve noticed that promotional offers spike around major national holidays, giving those of us

Alaska Will Join oneworld Next Month, But oneworld Awards Wait Until Summer
Alaska Airlines will become the second U.S. airline in the global oneworld alliance, along with American Airlines, effective March 31. But it turns out Alaska Airlines miles will not be redeemable on oneworld airlines that haven’t already been partners in the Mileage Plan program at that time. Instead mileage redemption on new partners in oneworld will have to wait until summer. In other words Alaska Airlines has rushed the work to join oneworld, and will actually join before it’s done. This means customers will be able to earn miles on new airlines, crediting to their Mileage Plan account –
