Buying an entire airline like Spirit isn’t something an individual can do directly.

Current Ownership and Financial Status

Spirit Airlines has been through Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection twice, first exiting in March 2025 after a lender‑backed take‑private deal and then facing another crisis in 2026 that led to talks of a government bailout. As of May 2026 the airline is still seeking a multi‑billion‑dollar bailout and its creditors are deciding whether to inject more cash or allow liquidation. The airline’s previous public listing on the NYSE American under the ticker “FLYY” began trading on April 29 2025, but subsequent financial troubles have kept the stock from being widely available. How You Might Acquire an Interest

If Spirit’s shares are trading on the NYSE American, an individual investor could purchase them through a brokerage like any other publicly traded stock. However, the ongoing bankruptcy and bailout negotiations mean that the stock may be suspended, delisted, or only available to accredited investors in private placements. The grassroots “Spirit 2.0” campaign that claimed millions in pledges does not involve actual equity and does not provide a mechanism for buying the airline. At present there is no public offering or sale that would allow an individual to buy the entire airline outright. One Mile at a Time +2

Spirit Airlines Exits Bankruptcy… But Now What?!?
In November 2024, Spirit Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, after billions of dollars of losses since the start of the pandemic, plus a failed takeover by JetBlue. We knew that the airline was planning on a quick bankruptcy process, and there’s now a major update, as this process has been completed. What I can’t wrap my head around is what the company’s plan is, exactly. In this post: As of March 12, 2025, Spirit Airlines has exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, via a lender-backed take-private deal. With this, control of the airline has gone to a

Spirit Airlines is Going Public Again, Will be Listed on the NYSE American
Spirit Airlines is going public once again, with plans to be listed on the NYSE American exchange. This is the latest twist for the beleaguered ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) which declared bankruptcy late last year. The airline announced today in a press release that it’s parent company, Spirit Aviation Holdings, Inc. has received approval to list its common stock on the NYSE American stock exchange. Note that the NYSE American is separate from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), though both are operated by Intercontinental Exchange. The Dania Beach, Florida based ULCC will be listed under the symbol “FLYY”.

Viral Grassroots Effort To Buy Spirit Airlines Claims $22 Million In Pledges — But Has No Cash And No Business Plan
With Spirit Airlines out of business there’s an attempt at a grass roots effort for “the people” to buy it. The project, “Spirit 2.0 — Owned by the People,” is seeking pledges from passengers, employees, and communities, to acquire the carrier’s assets – with one member, one vote (regardless of investment) but profit sharing based on pledge amount. The new carrier would offer worker equity through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, capped executive pay, open books, and “affordable fares” in a Green Bay Packers-style community ownership model applied to aviation. But website pledges are non-binding, they’re not actually

With Government Bailout Talks Stalled, Spirit Airlines May Not Survive Longer Than a Few Hours
Beleaguered ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines could have little more than a few hours of cash left and might be forced to ground flights forever by the end of Friday, as crunch talks with creditors and shareholders come to a head, amidst a stalled federal bailout. For now, at least, the Florida-based carrier is still flying. Planes remain in the sky, check-in desks at airports across the country are open, and Spirit is still taking money from new ticket sales. The situation could, however, change incredibly rapidly. The first signs that something is amiss could be Spirit requesting the
