Yes—Star Alliance upgrades can be used on All Nippon Airways (ANA) flights, but they come with a few important restrictions.
How the upgrades work
- United Global Premier Upgrades (GPUs) are valid on ANA for one‑segment, one‑cabin upgrades on any multi‑cabin international flight operated by ANA, provided the fare is a paid, published fare and the upgrade class is available Live and Let’s Fly .
- United MileagePlus miles can be applied through the Star Alliance Upgrade program to ANA tickets, but you must have award space in the target cabin (first or business) and you cannot wait‑list the upgrade One Mile at a Time .
- Any Star Alliance member’s miles can upgrade an ANA ticket as long as the reservation uses an ANA flight number (codeshare flights are not eligible) God Save the Points .
- Eligible fare classes are limited: economy upgrades are only possible in Y, B, and E; business upgrades are limited to C, D, and J (or similar high‑value classes) One Mile at a Time View from the Wing .
- Upgrade requests must be made within a specific window, typically between eight weeks and 24 hours before departure One Mile at a Time .
Practical tips
- Check the booking class of your ANA ticket against the eligible classes before attempting an upgrade.
- Verify that award seats are available in the desired cabin; if none exist, the upgrade cannot be processed.
- Use United’s upgrade portal or call United within the allowed time frame to submit the request.

United Introduces Star Alliance Upgrades
United has introduced Star Alliance upgrade awards — upgrades on most of their Star Alliance partners confirmed by redeeming miles. These has been available on other Star Alliance carriers for several months, United has just introduced them, but it’s notable that only Star Alliance offers this quite so broadly. United miles can be used for upgrades on ANA, Asiana, Austrian, LOT, Lufthansa, TAP Portugal and Thai Airways. (United miles could previously be used for upgrades on Lufthansa, but those were space available rather than confirmed.) Currently there are no upgrade options for other Star carriers such as Singapore, Air Canada, bmi, Swiss, Spanair, SAS, South African Airways, etc. Hopefully they’ll come in the future. Unfortunately you need to be buying nearly a full fare ticket in order to use this option. Y and B coach fares can be upgraded to business, and C and D business fares can be upgraded to first.
