Elite status matches and challenges are tools that loyalty programs use to attract and retain high‑value travelers.
Status Matches
- A status match lets a member transfer an existing elite tier from one brand to another by providing proof of the current status.
- The receiving program typically grants the equivalent tier for a limited period, often 90 days, so the traveler can experience the benefits before committing. 🔗
- Matches are marketed as a way to “steal” business from competitors, offering immediate perks such as upgrades, lounge access, and priority service without the member having to start from the bottom. 🔗
- Programs may require documentation like an elite membership card or a statement showing recent stays or flights to verify the match. 🔗
- Some matches are offered publicly, while others are limited to sales teams or invitation‑only, depending on the company’s strategy.🔗
Status Challenges
- A status challenge provides an accelerated path to a higher elite tier by reducing the usual requirements (e.g., fewer nights, miles, or spend) and compressing them into a short window, typically three to four months.
- Participants usually do not receive the new status until they successfully complete the challenge, though some programs grant temporary status during the challenge period. 🔗
- Challenges often have eligibility rules, such as not having completed a challenge for the same tier in the past five years or not having previously earned the targeted level. 🔗
- They may be offered for free to select members or require a fee, and registration can be done via phone, email, or a dedicated web page. 🔗
- Examples include Starwood’s “status challenges” that replaced elite matches in 2011, American Airlines’ four‑month challenges based on loyalty points, and various hotel chains that use challenges to fast‑track members to Diamond or Platinum status.🔗

Starwood Elite Status Challenges are Now Public
Starwood Preferred Guest elite status matches in March 2011 and replaced them with ‘status challenges’. Instead of giving you elite status because you’re an elite with another hotel chain, they let you earn status more quickly — fewer nights in a compressed period of time — though they don’t advance you the status while you’re working on the challenge. That program is no longer a secret, information passed from frequent flyer to frequent flyer, or something you stumble upon if asking Starwood whether there’s a way they can help you move your business to them from another chain.

Starwood Offering Elite Status Challenges But Only Through June 30
Starwood Preferred Guest eliminated elite status matches in March 2011 and replaced them with ‘status challenges’. I wrote about the change right before that happened, and it’s what prompted Lucky from One Mile at a Time to start staying with Starwood. He’s since done 500 nights with them. Status challenges let you earn status more quickly — fewer nights in a compressed period of time — though in Starwood’s case they don’t advance you the status while you’re working on the challenge. The challenge program is no longer a secret, information passed from frequent flyer to frequent flyer,

Free American Airlines Lounge Access if You Have United or Delta Status
Last year I wrote How to Get – and Use – Airline Status Matches. Travel providers are interested in acquiring their competitors’ best customers, but elite status has a lock-in effect. Sure, you might want to defect from United to American or from Delta to Alaska, but it’s pretty tough to do that and start from scratch with a new airline. You’re well treated as an elite, and it’s rough out there flying without any status (although now the bottom tier of status can be approximated in many cases with the airline’s co-branded credit card). So airlines

How Hyatt Status Matches Work Now
Hyatt elite status matches and challenges were originally meant to be tools for Hyatt’s sales team to use in bringing business over. As they became public in social media Gold Passport publicly acknowledged and welcomed members into them. A little over a year ago, Hyatt eliminated their fast track elite status methods. Then they brought them back as tools for Sales only. That’s because only a small percentage of people went on to maintain the status they were granted through these offers. In June Hyatt began offering fast track to Diamond status again but without granting Diamond status

Use Your Southwest Companion Pass To Get Top Status With Other Airlines
The Southwest Companion Pass is almost certainly one of the greatest airline perks around – the benefit that allows the pass holder to designate another person to fly free (excluding the taxes) with them on all flights. But, you can also leverage this Pass for actual elite status with other airlines as well! Here is what you need to know. Matching Elite Status to Other Airlines Most airlines that extend an offer to match elite status actually offer challenges with the status. That means that you demonstrate to a particular airline that you hold comparable status with another

Delta Skymiles Bringing Back Elite Status Match
In January I outlined how you can take elite status with one airline and get another airline to give you status, too. Some just straight up give you the status, others require you to fly a certain amount to earn it on an expedited basis. But it’s entirely common for airlines to want to do what they can to poach the best customers of their competitors. Delta even lists the opportunity on its website, but the website indicated the offer runs through June 30, 2013. They’ll give you status (up to Platinum, based on your current status

Status Match Fraud: What Do Airlines & Hotels Verify?
It’s common to see airline and hotel loyalty programs offer status match opportunities, whereby elite members with one program can have their status matched with a competing program. If executed properly, the concept makes sense — a high value customer may be looking to switch their business, but doesn’t want to start from scratch with a competitor. By offering a status match or challenge, a company can lure a potentially profitable customer. However, the actual process of verifying the legitimacy of status matches can be complicated, so I wanted to address that a bit in this post.
