Elite status matches let you keep the perks you already enjoy when you switch airlines or hotels, while status challenges give you a fast‑track way to earn those perks by meeting a shortened set of requirements.
What a status match looks like
- You provide proof of your current elite tier (often a screenshot or membership card) and the new carrier grants you the equivalent level for a limited period, usually 3–12 months Live and Let’s Fly .
- Some programs require a future reservation in a specific cabin; for example, Virgin Atlantic matches Gold status only if you have a Premium Economy or Business‑class flight booked, while Silver can be matched with any cabin View from the Wing .
- Matches are often advertised publicly (e.g., Alaska’s top‑tier MVP Gold 75K match via email) or appear as targeted offers in a promotions tab View from the Wing Miles to Memories .
How a status challenge works
- Instead of an immediate match, the carrier gives you temporary elite status and a reduced set of spend or travel targets to keep it. A typical challenge lasts about 90 days, after which you must meet the prorated requirements (e.g., a third of the annual mileage or spend threshold) to retain the status Live and Let’s Fly Miles to Memories .
- Challenges can be open to anyone (American’s paid challenges) or limited to members who have never completed a challenge before, as with Starwood’s hotel challenges View from the Wing View from the Wing View from the Wing .
- Registration windows are often short—American’s “Instant Status Pass” appears in the Promotions tab and must be claimed within 30 days, while Starwood lets you pick a three‑month stay period after registering View from the Wing Miles to Memories .
Typical steps to enroll
- Check eligibility – Verify whether the program requires existing elite status, a future booking, or a clean challenge history View from the Wing View from the Wing View from the Wing .
- Gather proof – Screenshots of your current tier, reservation details, or loyalty account numbers are commonly requested Boarding Area .
- Submit the request – Email the designated address (e.g., Alaska’s elite.flyer@alaskaair.com) or use an online form; some carriers also accept phone calls to customer service View from the Wing Miles to Memories .
- Wait for confirmation – Responses can be quick (Alaska’s “fairly quick” reply) or appear automatically in a promotions tab View from the Wing Miles to Memories .
- Meet the challenge criteria – Fly the required miles, spend the needed Loyalty Points, or stay the required nights within the challenge window to lock in the status Live and Let’s Fly Miles to Memories Boarding Area .
Common features across programs
- Time‑limited benefits – Both matches and challenges grant elite perks for a set period (often 3–12 months) before you must satisfy the full qualification Live and Let’s Fly Miles to Memories .
- Reduced thresholds – Challenges compress the usual mileage, spend, or night‑stay requirements, making it easier to earn status quickly Live and Let’s Fly View from the Wing .
- Proof and verification – Proof of existing status or a future reservation is a standard prerequisite View from the Wing View from the Wing .
- Public vs. invitation‑only – Some challenges are advertised on dedicated web pages (Starwood, Virgin Atlantic), while others appear only to selected members or through targeted offers (American’s Instant Status Pass) View from the Wing View from the Wing Miles to Memories .
By understanding these steps and the specific rules of each program, you can leverage status matches or challenges to retain elite benefits when switching providers or to accelerate your path to higher loyalty tiers.
A Guide to Asking Airlines to Give You Elite Status (“Status Match”)
Travel providers are interested in acquiring their competitors’ best customers, but elite status has a lock-in effect. You might want to defect from United to American or from Delta to Alaska, but it’s pretty tough to do that and start from scratch with a new airline. You’re well treated as an elite, and it’s rough out there flying without any status — although bottom tier of status can be approximated in many cases with the airline’s co-branded credit card. It’s hard to move your business when you’re used to getting upgrades! So airlines came up first with **status
Starwood Offering Elite Status Challenges But Only Through June 30
Starwood Preferred Guest eliminated elite status matches in March 2011 and replaced them with ‘status challenges’. I wrote about the change right before that happened, and it’s what prompted Lucky from One Mile at a Time to start staying with Starwood. He’s since done 500 nights with them. Status challenges let you earn status more quickly — fewer nights in a compressed period of time — though in Starwood’s case they don’t advance you the status while you’re working on the challenge. The challenge program is no longer a secret, information passed from frequent flyer to frequent flyer,

Starwood Elite Status Challenges are Now Public
Starwood Preferred Guest elite status matches in March 2011 and replaced them with ‘status challenges’. Instead of giving you elite status because you’re an elite with another hotel chain, they let you earn status more quickly — fewer nights in a compressed period of time — though they don’t advance you the status while you’re working on the challenge. That program is no longer a secret, information passed from frequent flyer to frequent flyer, or something you stumble upon if asking Starwood whether there’s a way they can help you move your business to them from another chain.

American Airlines ‘Instant Status Pass’, New Elite Status Challenge
American Airline revealed this week a new elite status challenge program, which is called ”Instant Status Pass.” The carrier has not offered status challenges or matches since it revamped the AAdvantage program early this year and introduced Loyalty Points. The new status challenge, Instant Status Pass, will be more personalized and based on how many Loyalty Points you earn. These offers will automatically show up in the Promotions tab for some members, and you’ll have 30 days to register. Even if the offer is not showing up, it could pop up later on. But you can also call
How to Unlock Elite Airline Status Matches Easily
I’ve spent a lot of time exploring different loyalty programs, and one of the best discoveries I’ve made is how airline status matches let me carry over the elite privileges I’ve worked so hard to earn on one airline into a new loyalty program. From seat upgrades to bonus earning rates, these matches open the door to higher-end experiences wherever my journeys may lead. A status match can be a game-changer when you’re switching to a new carrier for reasons such as relocating, finding better route options, or wanting to experience different alliance perks. I like to think of
Virgin Atlantic Offering New Elite Status Match Program
Virgin Atlantic has launched a formal status match program. If you have elite status with another airline (but explicitly not Delta, which is 49% owner of Virgin Atlantic) and a future flight booked they’ll give you 12 months of elite status as a match to your current level. Copyright: boarding1now / 123RF Stock Photo Virgin Atlantic hasn’t historically offered a status match program. They offered elite status through their sales department, and at one point had an ‘open registration’ link. More recently they offered status ‘challenges’: temporary silver status and fast track to gold. __Here are
Use Your Southwest Companion Pass To Get Top Status With Other Airlines
The Southwest Companion Pass is almost certainly one of the greatest airline perks around – the benefit that allows the pass holder to designate another person to fly free (excluding the taxes) with them on all flights. But, you can also leverage this Pass for actual elite status with other airlines as well! Here is what you need to know. Matching Elite Status to Other Airlines Most airlines that extend an offer to match elite status actually offer challenges with the status. That means that you demonstrate to a particular airline that you hold comparable status with another
