Booking flights with frequent‑flyer miles involves a few key steps that are similar across most airlines.
General Steps
- Log in to your frequent‑flyer account on the airline’s website.
- Choose the cabin class (e.g., business or economy) and enter your departure and destination cities along with your desired travel dates.
- View the calendar of award availability; dates with discounted mileage seats will be highlighted.
- Select the flight that fits your schedule and confirm the booking.
Adding a Passenger When Booking for Someone Else
- After finding the award flight, enter the name of the person who will actually travel as the passenger.
- Complete the reservation, then go to the airline’s “manage my reservation” or “my trips” page to attach the booking to the traveler’s frequent‑flyer number if needed.
- Note that you won’t earn additional miles on an award ticket, but any status perks tied to the passenger’s account will still apply.
Using Partner Sites and Tools
- If the airline’s own site doesn’t show enough award space, you can search partner inventories on sites like Alaska’s website, British Airways, or ExpertFlyer.com.
- Once you locate available seats, you can either book online directly through the partner site or call the airline’s reservations center to complete the award purchase.
- Some programs let you purchase additional miles (e.g., buying 60,000 miles with a bonus) to reach the required balance before booking.
Tips for Success
- Book as early as possible; many airlines release premium award seats up to a year in advance.
- Look for “sweet spots” where the mileage cost is unusually low for a particular route.
- Be prepared for less convenient connections, as award seats are often in lower‑priced fare buckets.
