Booking a flight with frequent‑flyer miles is done through your airline’s loyalty program website or a partner site, where you search for award seats and complete the reservation

General Steps

  • Log into your frequent‑flyer account on the airline’s website or the partner portal you plan to use.
  • Choose the cabin class, destination cities, and travel dates you want, then run a search for award availability.
  • Review the calendar or results page that shows which dates have seats available at the “promo” or discounted mileage level.
  • Select the flight that fits your schedule and confirm the booking, paying with the required number of miles rather than cash.
  • If you are booking for another traveler, enter their passenger details during the award reservation and later add the reservation to your frequent‑flyer account if needed.
  • After the award ticket is issued, use the airline’s “manage my reservation” tools to choose seats, add special meals, or move the ticket to a mobile wallet.

Using Partner Programs and Additional Options

  • Many airlines allow you to redeem miles on partner carriers, which can sometimes provide better value or more availability than using the airline’s own miles.
  • To access partner award space, you can search on sites that aggregate partner inventory such as Alaska’s website, British Airways’ website, or ExpertFlyer.com, then book directly or call the airline’s reservation center.
  • If you need more miles to complete a booking, some programs let you purchase miles (often with a bonus) before searching for award seats.
  • Keep in mind that airlines typically release only the lowest‑priced “saver” award buckets to partners, so availability may be limited compared to booking directly with the airline’s own miles.

How Do Frequent Flyer Miles Work?
I first started paying attention to the world of miles and points back in 2013. I had an upcoming family reunion scheduled for Lake Tahoe in the Summer of 2014, and I knew that 8 cross-country plane tickets were going to cost at least $3000. I had heard of miles, points and frequent flyer miles before, but that trip was the impetus for me to get serious about it. I opened a few credit cards, and used the signup bonuses to accrue 140,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points to get a free flight for my family of 8 to Lake Tahoe
