Booking flights with frequent‑flyer miles is a straightforward process once you know where to start.
Steps to Book a Flight with Miles
- Log into your frequent‑flyer account on the airline’s website or its partner portal.
- Search for award availability by entering your desired route, cabin class, and travel dates; many sites show a calendar of dates with discounted mileage requirements.
- Choose a flight that has seats available for the mileage level you want, often listed as “saver” or promo awards.
- Verify that the miles required are for the airline or its alliance partner you intend to use, as partner miles can sometimes provide better value.
- Complete the booking by following the site’s prompts, and after the reservation is made, add the ticket to your frequent‑flyer account if it isn’t automatically linked.
- Remember that award bookings do not earn additional miles, but you may still receive status perks associated with your account.
- If you lack enough miles, you can purchase or transfer miles (though this is usually not recommended) before finalizing the reservation.
- For programs that allow pooling, consider combining miles with family or friends to reach the required amount.

I had heard of miles, points and frequent flyer miles before, but that trip was the impetus for me to get serious about it. I opened a few credit cards, and used the signup bonuses to accrue 140,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points to get a free flight for my family of 8 to Lake Tahoe
