How do I book flights with miles?

Booking a flight using frequent‑flyer miles is straightforward once you know the basic steps.

Steps to Book an Award Ticket

  • Log in to your airline’s frequent‑flyer account or the partner program’s website.
  • Choose the cabin class you want (economy, business, etc.) and enter your desired origin, destination, and travel dates.
  • The system will display a calendar or list showing dates with award‑seat availability and any promotional mileage discounts.
  • Select a flight that fits your schedule and proceed to the booking page.
  • Pay the required taxes and fees (miles cover the fare, but taxes/fees are usually paid with a credit card).
  • If the airline requires a phone reservation (e.g., some American Airlines or JAL bookings), call the airline’s reservation center to hold or confirm the ticket and then pay the taxes/fees.
  • After the reservation is confirmed, add your frequent‑flyer number to the booking if it isn’t already attached, using the “manage my reservation” or similar tool on the airline’s website.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Use miles directly on the airline that issued them or on a partner airline’s site; converting miles to cash, gift cards, or merchandise usually provides poor value.
  • Avoid trying to earn additional miles on an award ticket—most programs do not credit miles or elite‑status points when the fare is paid with miles.
  • For partner program bookings, you may need to call the operating carrier to add a connection or to finalize the reservation.
  • Keep an eye on promotional mileage discounts (e.g., Air France/KLM “promo” awards) that can reduce the number of miles required for a given cabin.

How Do Frequent Flyer Miles Work?
I first started paying attention to the world of miles and points back in 2013. I had an upcoming family reunion scheduled for Lake Tahoe in the Summer of 2014, and I knew that 8 cross-country plane tickets were going to cost at least $3000. I had heard of miles, points and frequent flyer miles before, but that trip was the impetus for me to get serious about it. I opened a few credit cards, and used the signup bonuses to accrue 140,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points to get a free flight for my family of 8 to Lake Tahoe

Do I Still Earn Miles – If I Use Them To Book My Flight?
There’s something very emotional about cashing in a whole bunch of miles. They take so long to collect, yet only seconds to spend. Unless of course, you live in a country where you can earn 60,000 of them almost instantly, for buying a latte. Whatever pace you earn em’ – there’s just the one question on peoples minds as they cash in: will I at least earn some miles back on the flights I’ve just booked? The answer for most people is NO if we’re talking airline miles, sometimes with credit card points – but there are exceptions. If

How miles made a last minute birthday visit possible
Last month, on a Tuesday I decided to visit my dad for his birthday. His birthday was that Thursday. And, while I live in southeast Michigan, he lives near Greensboro North Carolina: about 500 miles away. Thanks to airline miles, the last minute trip was both possible and cheap. Via Google Flights I checked flight prices. Most flights were well over $600. Too high. I would use airline miles instead. I noted flight options: Delta had non-stop and one-stop flights. AA and United offered only one-stop flights. Hoping for non-stop flights, I logged into my Delta account
