I am going on a family trip to Korea and Japan, and my mom has 552000 korean air skypass miles. The round trip from Chicago to Seoul is nearly 1,000 dollars more expensive than the round trip flight from Chicago to Tokyo. Because of that, I think it makes more sense to do Chicago to Tokyo, but what should we do about the korean airlines points? Can I book the direct chicago to tokyo flight on JAL or a different airline through the korean air skypass site using korea air’s miles?

Planning a family trip to Korea and Japan and wondering how to make the most of your 552,000 Korean Air SkyPass miles?

Booking Options with Korean Air SkyPass

  • Korean Air allows you to book award tickets on many SkyTeam partner airlines directly through its website.
  • This online partner‑booking feature does not include airlines outside the SkyTeam alliance, so you cannot book a JAL Chicago‑Tokyo award seat using Korean Air miles.
  • You could use your miles for Korean Air flights that connect through Seoul, such as Chicago‑Seoul and then Seoul‑Tokyo, or for business‑class seats on other SkyTeam carriers that serve Chicago‑Tokyo routes if available.
  • Typical SkyTeam partners where Korean Air miles can be redeemed include China Eastern and Saudia for first‑class awards, and other partners for business‑class, but the program does not support direct award bookings on non‑SkyTeam airlines like JAL.
  • If you prefer a direct Chicago‑Tokyo flight, you would need to use a different mileage program or purchase a ticket, as Korean Air SkyPass does not provide a direct award option for that route.

You see, the Chase Ultimate Rewards program used to have Korean Air SkyPass as a transfer partner, but that partnership ended in late 2018. Ahead of it ending, many of us were trying to decide whether or not to make a speculative transfer. While I’d usually prefer not to make a speculative points transfer, Korean Air SkyPass was a unique partner for a variety of

Korean Air SkyPass Eliminates Holds On Award Tickets
Korean Air SkyPass is probably my favorite SkyTeam frequent flyer program. What makes the program so great? Saudia’s 777-300ER first class Not everything about the program is perfect, though: Korean Air’s 747-8 first class There’s one other thing that has historically been awesome about SkyPass, which has recently changed. Historically SkyPass has been the most generous frequent flyer program when it comes to allowing award ticket holds. Back in the day Korean Air SkyPass would allow you to hold virtually any award ticket for travel on Korean Air up until two days
