…Is airline status worth it?

Airline elite status can bring perks, but whether it’s worth the cost depends on your travel habits and the specific program.
Cost‑Effective Options
- Frontier Gold for $69 gives a carry‑on bag, seat selection, and priority boarding through December 2026.
- Spirit Silver upgrade for $79 adds points pooling, standard and exit‑row seat selection, priority boarding, overweight‑bag waiver, same‑day standby, and priority check‑in.🔗
Value of Traditional Elite Status
- Delta now sells first‑class upgrades for as little as $26 and only 12% of first‑class seats go to upgrades, which diminishes the traditional value of status.
- AAdvantage Executive Platinum no longer guarantees upgrades, making the tier far less valuable than it was a decade ago. 🔗
- Marriott Titanium status can provide airline benefits such as Aeroplan 25K and United Silver, illustrating how cross‑program perks can add value.🔗
Benefits That Remain Valuable
- Priority check‑in, security, and boarding, plus extra baggage allowances, consistently save time and money at the airport.
- Complimentary or heavily discounted seat upgrades still matter on long‑haul flights, helping travelers avoid paying full upgrade fees.
- SkyTeam Elite Plus perks—including lounge access, priority services, and extra baggage—remain attractive for frequent flyers.🔗
When Status May Not Be Worth It
- If you don’t plan to fly the airline within the next 12–18 months, a paid status like Frontier Gold may not recoup its cost.
- Travelers who can buy cheap first‑class tickets and manipulate schedule changes may find status less essential, as described by a Delta‑focused flyer. 🔗
- The credit‑card spend required for high‑tier status can outweigh the benefits when upgrades are scarce.🔗
Tips for Deciding
- Calculate the annual cost of the status versus the monetary value of the specific perks you’ll use (e.g., bag fees, seat fees, upgrade savings).
- Match your travel patterns to programs that offer the most relevant perks, such as lounge access for long trips or extra baggage for frequent checked‑bag flyers. 🔗
- Consider status‑match promotions (e.g., Flying Blue Gold or Platinum) to gain benefits without a long‑term commitment.🔗

$69 Frontier Gold Status
For just $69 you can buy Frontier Airlines Gold Status through December 2026 and you don’t even need status with another airline to match. You only need an account with the following airline loyalty programs: Southwest Rapid Rewards®, JetBlue TrueBlue®, Spirit Airlines Free Spirit®, or Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan™ Now, if you don’t have plans to fly Frontier in the next year and a half… this probably isn’t worth it. But, if you think there is even a slight chance, I think it is. You’re spending $69 to secure a carry on bag, seat selection, and priority boarding. You’d

Delta’s Selling First Class For $26 More Than Coach — Only 12% Of Seats Now Go to Upgrades, And Loyalty Is Dead
Frequent flyers stick mostly with one airline and build up status. In return, they’re promised better treatment by their airline. The most coveted benefit is upgrades. In the U.S., if the airline doesn’t sell first class seats they say they’ll hand those out to passengers in the order of their status. This was a consistent benefit flyers could count on for years, and it kept them loyal. They’d buy less convenient flight schedules, take connections instead of non-stops on another airline, and pay more for tickets to stick with their preferred carrier. But the upgrade benefit is almost gone.

Flying Blue Status match returns for UK Residents
So it’s been… just over 12 months since British Airways did the dirty on its Club members, even though there has been a little backtrack. And most of us have a view if we are on track to retain our frequent flyer status with British Airways. Or not in some cases. Well, a new lifeline has been launched, with a paid status match with Air France-KLM’s frequent flyer programme – Flying Blue. The link to start the match is at https://flyingblue.statusmatch.com/. For British Airways “The Club” Members who are resident in the United Kingdom,

I Tried Status-Free Airline, Hotel Free Agency And Hated It
After years of frustration with loyalty programs I proudly freed myself of the elite status grind. I hated it and came crawling back to both airline and hotel status. Every year the requirements get higher, the benefits are fewer – what’s the point in being loyal to a brand when it won’t be loyal to its clients? I had been loyal to American Airlines for more than 20 years achieving status (often Executive Platinum) for more than half that period. But following an experience in which Qatar sold business class for 40% less than American flying to the

How to Unlock Elite Airline Status Matches Easily
I’ve spent a lot of time exploring different loyalty programs, and one of the best discoveries I’ve made is how airline status matches let me carry over the elite privileges I’ve worked so hard to earn on one airline into a new loyalty program. From seat upgrades to bonus earning rates, these matches open the door to higher-end experiences wherever my journeys may lead. A status match can be a game-changer when you’re switching to a new carrier for reasons such as relocating, finding better route options, or wanting to experience different alliance perks. I like to think of

Is it Worth Going After Delta Air Lines 360 Diamond, Diamond, Platinum, Gold or Silver Medallion Status Anymore?
I have such fond memories of my very first ever mileage run to reach Delta Air Lines Silver Medallion status. I drove to Chicago and flew to Texas. I then, very quickly, boarded the exact same jet and flew back. The crew all just giggled and so enjoyed and maybe even respected the fact that I so loved and respected Delta that I would do this one day insanity to have amazing perks the next flying year. My gosh times have changed! Back in my day, really not that long ago, you earned your status on how far

Is There Value in Marriott Titanium Over Marriott Platinum?
This is a question I’ve been asking myself for years, and as I get closer to Marriott Lifetime Platinum, I’ve been considering whether it’s worth going out of my way to continue renewing Titanium Elite status. There’s no obvious answer either, as even my friends in the Miles & Points community have differing opinions. I’ve finally come to a conclusion and decided I do care about Marriott Titanium status, but not for the obvious, hotel-related reasons. Marriott Platinum includes all the important benefits: Granted, the rules do vary by property: some properties are exempt from breakfast depending

Spirit Airlines paid status upgrade: Higher status from $79
Spirit Airlines has run status matches a number of times in recent years. Some matches have been free (like in 2022 and 2024), and others have been paid matches (like this one in 2023). However, this round of status bingo is a little different in that it is a paid status upgrade rather than a match, and it lasts through December 31, 2026. Base-level members can only upgrade to Silver status, and members with Silver can either reclaim or upgrade to Gold. Given the fee, this match likely only makes sense for those who expect a fair amount of flying

I Earned AAdvantage Platinum Pro Status, And That’s Good Enough For Me!
I finally once again earned oneworld Emerald status, and I’m really happy about that. Let me provide some background, and then I’ll share how I’m thinking about status with American going forward. In this post: For 14 years, I had AAdvantage Executive Platinum status, which is American’s top (published) tier status. At the beginning of the current elite status year I lost that, and dropped all the way to AAdvantage Gold status, which I receive on account of my million miler status with American. Why did I give up on Executive Platinum status? It actually wasn’t due

Air France-KLM Flying Blue Paid Status Match Promotion: Eligibility, Cost, Value
For quite some time, Air France-KLM Flying Blue has been offering a paid status match promotion. This status match has long had residency requirements for eligibility, and that continues to be the case. However, we’ve just seen an update to the eligible countries, for anyone who may be interested (so that I don’t bury the lede, the United States still isn’t eligible). In this post: The website statusmatch.com is currently partnering with Air France-KLM Flying Blue to offer a status match promotion, with the option to earn Silver, Gold, or Platinum status. This offer is available to residents
