Watch Greg compare the top award search tools – which one is best? (Video)
At Frequent Miler, we often talk about great value awards that are possible to book with your points and miles, but searching for business class flights to popular destinations can be difficult. Luckily there are a lot of award search tools around right now to make this easier. In this video, Greg is going to experiment with a hypothetical trip and see which tool helps him the most. (You can also read about the different tools mentioned here in this post, Which award search tool is best?) (00:45) – The premise: A family of four is trying to get

PointsYeah: Free award searches and alerts (now with seat maps, hotels & more)
PointsYeah is one of my favorite award search tools. It’s fast and user friendly. It offers both flight and hotel searches, and alerts, across a wide selection of loyalty programs. And it does all of this for free. The paid version adds wider date ranges, multiple airports, and more alerts. Finding great value flight and hotel awards can be tough. Luckily there are quite a few award search tools on the market that make it easy. PointsYeah is probably the most well-rounded award search tool available. While it’s not perfect, it does a very good job with live searches,

The hunt for the best flight award finder
To-date, my post “Which award search tool is best?” has focused mostly on features. I prefer tools that let us search across award programs, across dates, and across multiple airports all at once. Plus, I think it’s critical for tools to offer robust alerts. The best awards are rarely there at the time you run your search and so your best bet is to be alerted when the award opens up. In that post I’ve also listed the loyalty programs that each tool supposedly supports. The problem is that, in general, the tools aren’t reliable: they may list a program

A battle of the hotel award alert tools leads to loving them all the more
Greg has written extensively about the best award search tools, both for flights (we also did a podcast episode about the 5 best) and for hotels. I’ve only recently gotten into using what is arguably the most valuable feature of award search tools: Award Alerts. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been putting the best hotel award search tools through their paces to see which would come out on top in my own award searches. I’ve had some interesting results, but the main takeaway for me has been that these tools are worth their weight in gold as a whole.

Award alerts really work
The point of this post is all in the title. I love tools that let you set up alerts so that you’ll get notified when airline and hotel awards open up. I’ve recently had success using these tools to fly the exact United Polaris flight to London that I wanted, and to book the exact dates I needed at Nick’s favorite European hotel: the Grand Hotel Victoria at Lake Como. Of course, you won’t always get the exact flight or hotel award that you want, but it happens often enough that I think it’s an essential part of award booking.
