United and American Want to Launch Additional Service to Tokyo Haneda
American Airlines and United Airlines have applied to fly nonstop from New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), respectively. These applications are now with the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) for approval. Pending approval, American will offer year-round, nonstop service once daily using a Boeing 777-200. This will complement service provided by fellow oneworld airline, Japan Airlines (it currently flies the route). American currently flies to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) from both Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) (1x daily) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

New Delta routes to Tokyo Haneda airport available
Delta put many new routes on sale today to and from Tokyo Haneda airport. That’s good news for those traveling to and from Tokyo as Haneda is much more convenient for accessing Tokyo — and it meant at least a temporary glut of award space that was available via Virgin Atlantic for 60K miles each way. While I don’t see much availability now, it’s worth keeping your eye out if you have hopes to visit Tokyo from March 2020 onward. The Deal Quick Thoughts Delta already flies between Los Angeles and Minneapolis and Tokyo Haneda and in

Big 3 (United, American, Delta) Finalise New Tokyo Haneda (HND) Flights
Earlier this year, the US Department of Transportation formally granted 12 additional slots at Tokyo’s Haneda airport ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics. Tokyo’s Haneda airport matters as its a much more centrally located airport to Tokyo’s metropolis and generally a more pleasurable experience, but like London’s Heathrow airport, it is slot restricted. Of the 12 new slots, Delta Air Lines got 5, United Airlines got 4, American Airlines got 2 and Hawaiian Airlines picked up 1. While that isn’t exactly how I thought allocations would play out, it didn’t surprise me to see Delta come out as the

Hawaiian Airlines Adds Nonstop Seattle to Tokyo and Seoul Flights
With the merger of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines underway, the two airlines are aligning their operations more and more each day. Last week, I wrote about Hawaiian moving near Alaska at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Hawaiian also announced that it was ending flights between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL). Many speculated that Hawaiian would use the Airbus A330-200 that was flying the route to add international flights and they were right. Hawaiian announced today that it will launch flights between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and both Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN) and

Japan Airlines Restarts Tokyo Narita to Chicago
That didn’t take long. Coming this spring, Japan Airlines restarts Tokyo Narita to Chicago. In fact, it was only in 2023 that this route was axed, leaving Chicago O’Hare to be connected with only Tokyo Haneda for a spell. However convenient Haneda is for passengers going to downtown Tokyo, or for connecting to domestic flights, it left much to be desired for international transfers. But Narita, that’s still the place to depart Tokyo for points beyond East Asia…or more aptly, it’s very weak for domestic flights. That JAL reconnects Narita with Chicago so soon after canceling the

Sorry, United. American Airlines Wins Coveted Tokyo Haneda Airport Slot
American Airlines has emerged victorious in the battle for coveted takeoff and landing slots at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND). This slot became available when Delta Air Lines pulled the plug on its service from Portland International Airport (PDX). Once upon a time, Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) was a hub for both Northwest Airlines and Pan Am Pacific. These were acquired by Delta Air Lines and United Airlines and Narita lost hub status in 2020 and 2011, respectively. In the past few years, all of the major US carriers have been making plays for space at Tokyo Haneda Airport
