The sky appears blue because molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere scatter shorter wavelengths of sunlight—like blue—more than longer wavelengths.
Why Blue Scatters the Most
- Sunlight contains all colors of the spectrum, but blue light has a shorter wavelength and scatters more when it hits air molecules.
- This scattering creates the blue glow we see in the daytime sky.🔗
Why Not Other Colors?
- Red and yellow light pass through more directly, so they dominate at sunrise and sunset when sunlight travels through more atmosphere.
- The sky appears darker or grayish when pollution or clouds block or diffuse the blue light.

Glacier Lagoon Zodiac Boat Tour: Jökulsárlón, Iceland
During our trip to Iceland, we didn’t make any advance plans for activities. We had a general idea of what we wanted to visit each day and specific times that places were open, but the only set time was when we had to be at our hotels for dinner at the end of the day. Having an open schedule meant we could spend as much, or as little time at each location as we wanted. The one downside was that we had the chance of missing out on something we wanted to do if it was booked up.
